One of the Biggest Video Game Franchises Is Suddenly Ending for Good

A hugely popular video game series seems to be finishing for good, which is upsetting many fans. It’s unusual for a game series to end by choice. While games like Uncharted have concluded intentionally, often companies continue a franchise as long as possible. It’s logical to keep releasing games within an established IP as long as there’s still interest. Unfortunately, many gaming franchises have faded away as players lost interest, and they simply weren’t continued.

It’s really sad to see what’s happening to Rock Band, one of the best music video games ever made! It started as a rival to Guitar Hero, but it quickly stood out because it let you play as a whole band. We’re talking a drum kit, a microphone, and even a keyboard with Rock Band 3! Because it had all those instruments, the song selection was way more diverse. Sadly, this whole type of game kind of faded away in the early 2010s. There was an economic downturn, and honestly, the games just didn’t have much room to grow or be different from each other – it mostly came down to the music and a few little tweaks to how you played.

Rock Band 4 Is Shutting Down, Potentially Marking the End of the Franchise

It looks like the Rock Band series is coming to an end. Harmonix announced that Rock Band 4 will soon be removed from digital stores because the licenses for its songs are expiring after 10 years. As it happens, Rock Band 4 is 10 years old this weekend, meaning Harmonix can no longer sell the game starting next week. Also, all Rock Band 4 downloadable content (DLC) songs will also become unavailable when they reach their 10-year anniversary. So, songs will gradually be removed from sale in the months and years ahead, so if you’re hoping to purchase anything, you should do so quickly. The clock is ticking!

You’ll continue to have access to anything you’ve already purchased, and you can still find a used copy of Rock Band 4, though it might become more expensive because it will be harder to find. This is a disappointing outcome, but it was somewhat predictable. It seems likely that this marks the end of the Rock Band series. A new installment hasn’t been released in nearly ten years, and Rock Band 4 wasn’t a commercial or critical success.

It really looks like this is the end for Rock Band, which is so sad! I’m hearing some talk about Guitar Hero possibly making a comeback, but I honestly don’t know if people will be into it. We’re all used to free-to-play games now, and we’ve already spent so much money on instruments. Plus, even games that *don’t* need all that hardware can still be expensive. Honestly, the thought of a Rock Band 5 coming out now just makes me worry about how much it would cost! It’s a big investment, and I’m not sure I’m ready for that.

Beyond that, creating these games is expensive for developers. When copies of games like Rock Band aren’t sold, it can lead to significant financial losses, especially because the instruments add a substantial cost to manufacturing beyond just the game software. Mad Catz experienced this firsthand soon after Rock Band 4 launched, reporting an $11 million loss primarily due to unsold copies. The company later described its involvement with Rock Band 4 as a “burden” due to the financial difficulties it caused.

Harmonix, now part of Epic Games, is developing Fortnite Festival, a music game similar to Rock Band, inside of Fortnite. Players can use any of their existing Fortnite character skins and play music with friends. You can play using a controller or keyboard, and it even works with real gaming instruments. It’s likely the closest we’ll get to a brand new Rock Band game, which is a shame.

Even though they weren’t able to make enough changes to release completely new games, Rock Band was a fantastic series. The music was incredible, the visual style had a cool, alternative feel, and it brought people together for countless fun co-op gaming nights with friends and family. If Rock Band is really over, it had a wonderful run, and we’ll all fondly remember playing along in our living rooms with those plastic instruments.
