Kate Gosselin Details Having 3-Hour Surgery for “Life-Altering” Injury

Kate Gosselin is on the mend.

Just two days after concerning her followers with a request for prayers while hospitalized, the Jon & Kate Plus 8 star explained how she was injured. She had been playing fetch with her German shepherds, Meika and Nanuq, when the incident occurred.

Oh my gosh, you guys, I was *listening* to Kate on TikTok Live on September 30th – and People reported on it too! – and she told us the most *terrifying* thing. She actually fractured her tibial plateau and had to have surgery! Can you believe it? They had to put plates and pins in her leg! And get this – the surgeon *literally* started the conversation at 5 a.m. with, ‘So this is one of those things that is a life-altering event.’ Kate said she was instantly hooked – like, he definitely had her attention! I’m just… I’m so worried about her! It’s just awful, absolutely awful.

As a lifestyle expert, I always say it’s the everyday moments we cherish, and that’s certainly what this 50-year-old woman experienced. She described it as a completely “normal day” – she and her boyfriend, Steve, were simply having fun throwing a ball around with their dogs. It just goes to show you, things can change in an instant, even when everything seems perfectly ordinary. Remember to prioritize safety even during relaxed activities!

“He threw the ball, and she sprinted after it, running incredibly fast,” Kate said. “I moved the wrong way, trying to avoid her, but she crashed into the side of my leg, right into my knee, at full speed.”

She explained, “The best way to put it is that it felt like a concrete wall rushing towards you at the speed of light.”

Kate, who has twins Mady and Cara, both 24, and sextuplets Alexis, Hannah, Leah, Aaden, Collin and Joel, 21, with her former husband Jon Gosselin, remembered falling apart after the crash. She said she “felt stuff move” in her leg when she tried to get up.

Even though she hoped the pain would lessen, the TLC star explained that it didn’t improve. This led Steve to take her to urgent care, and she was eventually hospitalized for a three-hour surgery.

Before starting her TikTok Live, Kate quickly updated her worried fans on how she was doing. She explained in a TikTok video that she wanted to reassure them because, as she put it, “I think I scared you all.”

Update: I had surgery this morning and am currently taking five pain medications (reportedly for one of the most painful surgeries possible), she shared in another TikTok. “I’m not able to share the specifics right now, but only because I’m having trouble concentrating.”

I’m thrilled to share I’m doing really well! I’ll be sharing more details very soon. I truly CANNOT express how grateful I am for all of your prayers and support! Sending you all my love!

Oh my gosh, I remember when it happened! It was February 2017, and I was absolutely devastated to hear that Jamie Lynn Spears‘ sweet little Maddie Aldridge – she was only 8 years old at the time – had an accident. She was riding an ATV near their home in Louisiana, and it just… flipped into a pond! I was so scared! She was actually *under the water* for what felt like forever, but thankfully it was only minutes. I was glued to the news, just praying for her. It was terrifying!

It was absolutely terrifying. I remember finally getting her out of the water, and when I saw her, and then the first responders took over, we honestly believed she was gone,” I shared on Maria MenounosBetter Together podcast back in 2020. “We truly thought we’d lost our daughter.”

It was such a relief! While we didn’t immediately know the full extent of the impact, thankfully, Maddie was awake and communicating again just two days after the incident. And even better, within a few weeks, she was completely back to her normal routine – it was a huge weight off our shoulders. It really showed us how resilient she is! Recovery isn’t always linear, but seeing her thrive again was incredible.

Oh my gosh, you guys, listening to Jamie Lynn talk just *wrecked* me! She said, and I’m still getting chills, “God gave me the blessing of giving me my daughter back,” and honestly, I started tearing up right then and there. Can you imagine? She explained she lost her, and then… she got her back! It’s just… *so* emotional. I’m so happy for her and her little one!

Filming with Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp on their 2025 action comedy Bride Hard took an unexpected turn during Rebel’s last day of shooting as a spy. Rebel told Access Hollywood in an interview from June 2025, “During a fight scene, a prop gun accidentally hit my face. It was a complete accident, and it split my nose open, so I had to leave the set. It was my final night of filming, and I just thought, ‘What are the chances?'”

I remember she described being absolutely terrified after the 2023 incident, saying, “I was freaking out.” Apparently, it was serious enough that they needed an ambulance and a plastic surgeon right away. She explained that if they hadn’t gotten a specialist in quickly, she could have been left with permanent scarring. Thankfully, the plastic surgeon was able to do all the necessary stitches, and now you can’t even tell it happened. It’s amazing how well she recovered!

Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon had a scary accident at home, nearly losing a finger. He tripped and fell, and while trying to brace himself on the counter, his ring caught and partially dislocated his finger.

Let me tell you, I’ve seen some things in my years as a lifestyle expert, but this one is pretty dramatic! A man recently experienced something called “ring avulsion” – basically, a really nasty injury to his finger caused by his ring getting caught. It was so severe, he ended up needing 10 days in the hospital while doctors worked tirelessly to prevent amputation. It’s a good reminder to be careful with your jewelry, and if something *does* happen, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention immediately!

A skilled hiker and athlete who participates in long-distance running, swimming, and triathlons, Zane Wach almost became sick from the high altitude while hiking with his father, Ryan Wach, on Mount Whitney in California in June 2025.

The 14-year-old began having hallucinations, Ryan told SFGATE. He was aware that what he was seeing wasn’t real. He described seeing things such as snowmen and Kermit the Frog.

Ryan repeatedly stopped his teenage son from walking off the cliff while they were hiking back down the trail. “He wasn’t thinking clearly, and we still aren’t sure why,” the father explained. “I think it was likely a mix of being really tired, not enough sleep, possibly being dehydrated, and lingering effects from the altitude sickness. Basically, he started to question what was real.”

After two previous tries, Ryan couldn’t reach Zane in time and had to watch as his son fell approximately 120 feet from the cliff. They waited six hours for a helicopter from the Inyo County Search & Rescue team to arrive and transport Zane to Southern Inyo Hospital in Lone Pine, where he was initially stabilized before being moved to a specialized pediatric trauma center in Las Vegas. Doctors put Zane into a medically induced coma, but he eventually started breathing independently.

“Ultimately, this will be a story of overcoming incredible challenges,” Ryan explained, referring to his teenager who sustained a head injury, as well as a broken finger, ankle, and fractured pelvis. “However, we’re still going through it at the moment.”

On January 1st, 2023, Avengers star Jeremy Renner was helping a truck that was stuck in the snow near his Lake Tahoe home using a snowplow. After getting out of the vehicle, he was accidentally pulled underneath it while attempting to prevent it from hitting his nephew, resulting in 38 broken bones.

Lying on the ice, my heartbeat slowed, and on that New Year’s Day, without my daughter, sisters, friends, or parents knowing, I simply grew exhausted,” he explained in his 2025 memoir My Next Breath. “After roughly thirty minutes of manually breathing while on the ice – a struggle similar to performing ten to twenty push-ups every minute for half an hour… that’s when I passed away.

Despite suffering broken bones, significant blood loss, and the danger of dangerously low body temperature, he wrote, “I know I died-in fact, I’m sure of it.” He explained that when the emergency medical technicians arrived, they found his heart rate had dropped to just 18 beats per minute. He stated, “At 18 beats per minute, you’re basically dead.”

TikTok creator Emilie Kiser and her husband Brady Kiser experienced a heartbreaking event when their 3-year-old son, Trigg Kiser, accidentally fell into the pool at their home in Arizona in May 2025.

According to USA Today, the Chandler Police Department reported that officers were called to a home on May 12th regarding a child who had been found unresponsive after being pulled from a pool in the backyard. Police and firefighters both performed CPR at the scene before transporting the child, Trigg, to Chandler Regional Hospital. Unfortunately, the toddler passed away six days later.

Emilie subsequently took legal action against Maricopa County government agencies, asking the court to prevent the public from learning details about his death. The lawsuit explained, “Emilie is doing everything she can to support her young son, two-month-old Theodore,” and added, “Each day is a significant struggle for her.”

A family trip to Thailand became “the worst 10 days” for Dr. Cara Hodgson when she received an electric shock from power lines in December 2023. After losing consciousness and being taken to the emergency room, the social media personality spent the following week and a half “in and out of hospitals, working to get her strength back and fighting for her life,” she explained in an Instagram post on New Year’s Day. “I feel incredibly fortunate to still be alive today.”

Therefore, the orthodontist discovered a renewed appreciation for life even amidst discomfort. Cara explained that the experience reminded her-and all of us-of something important when we get bogged down in daily worries: “What a precious privilege it is to be alive,” she said. “Being able to breathe, eat, talk, move your body is something grand and something to be celebrated.”

A sad event took place in June 2025 when Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins fell while hiking on Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in Indonesia. She fell from a cliff – thankfully not into the volcano itself. According to a statement from the Brazilian government, a team of 48 people searched for her for four days, but were slowed down by bad weather, difficult terrain, and poor visibility. Sadly, they eventually found Juliana’s body.

A family’s Instagram account shared that the rescue team finally reached Juliana Marins. The post sadly confirmed that she had passed away. The family expressed their deep gratitude for all the prayers, kind messages, and support they received during this difficult time.

In 2015, Tori Spelling, known for her role in Beverly Hills, 90210, had an accident while at an Easter brunch at Benihana, a Japanese restaurant. She fell and burned her right arm on a Hibachi grill. Following skin graft surgery to heal the burn, the actress chose to file a lawsuit against the restaurant.

She later shared on a 2024 episode of her and Jennie Garth‘s podcast 9021OMG that she received a skin graft taken from her leg. “It’s not something many people can say – ‘Hey, I’m wearing my thigh on my arm’ – and I’m serious,” she explained. “I essentially have a thin layer of skin from my thigh on my arm because the burn was so severe.”

Comedian Tony Knight tragically died in June 2024 while at the Rock&Cars festival in France after being struck by falling tree branches. Joanne Allen, the sister of Hayley Wright, Tony’s partner of many years, shared in a GoFundMe post that he was 54 years old and enjoying life immensely. She described him as fit, healthy, happy, and full of potential, noting his charismatic, funny, and passionate personality.

He was, naturally, deeply loved by his partner for many years. “He possessed incredible talent and was skilled at countless things,” Haley shared in a post on Instagram. “He could turn his hand to anything. He was a wonderful friend to so many people, and a devoted dog owner… but above all, he was my everything, and life will never feel the same without him.”

A company celebration took a terrible turn in January 2024. To begin the 25th anniversary celebrations for Chicago-based software firm Vistex, CEO Sanjay Shah and president Vishwanath Raju Datla were hoisted in an iron cage. The cage was intended to descend 20 feet onto a platform at the party in India, according to a company representative who spoke with The Times of India. However, two cables broke, causing both men to fall onto the concrete stage.

According to the report, Sanjay, 56, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital after the accident. Vishwanath, 52, suffered a serious head injury and sadly died several months afterward.

Orlando Bloom revealed in a 2022 Instagram video with UNICEF that when he was 19, he fell three stories from a window and fractured his spine. He was attempting to reach the roof of a three-story building with friends when the drainpipe he was climbing gave way. Despite breaking multiple vertebrae, “I was very lucky to survive the fall because my spinal cord remained intact.”

He explained that while he was hospitalized, doctors initially told him he might never walk again. He described this as the start of a difficult and agonizing process of realizing and understanding recurring patterns in his life that had caused several accidents. Ultimately, these patterns led to him breaking his back, an event he considered a near-death experience.

After leaving the hospital wearing a back brace and dealing with a lot of physical and emotional pain, he told GQ in 2005, “I immediately started going to parties-still wearing the brace.” He explained that it took a few months for him to understand this was his new reality, and he didn’t want to ruin the opportunities he had.

He explained that the experience has “shaped my entire life.” He continued, “You don’t appreciate things until you almost lose them. I used to treat roads like racetracks on my motorcycles and in my cars – it was foolish. It wasn’t about trying to look cool, I simply enjoyed the thrill of risk. But I’ve calmed down now.”
