John Stamos is hoping his son will have mercy on the ladies.
The Full House star revealed that his and wife Caitlin McHugh’s 7-year-old son, Billy Stamos, is already using his dad’s well-known name to try and impress girls at his new school.
“My son told me, ‘Dad, we were asked to list all of our belongings,’” John shared with Will Marfuggi, a correspondent for TopMob News, at a charity event benefiting Adopt the Arts and Let Music Fill My World on September 30th. He explained that the students were asked to write down their favorite television programs. “The student sitting beside him wrote Fuller House.”
That moment gave Billy the ideal chance to share a story about his family, telling his new classmate, “Actually, that’s my dad! He’s on that TV show, and he plays Uncle Jesse.”
John said the girl was extremely surprised and thrilled by the news. The 62-year-old playfully added, “He’s using it with the girls.”
Even though John mentioned his well-known father, he explained that Billy constantly jokes about his work as an actor.
“He watches Full House, but he only watches it to make fun of me,” John confessed. “Because I always tell him, ‘Go put your Legos away.’”
Then Billy will respond with Michelle Tanner’s famous line, “You got it, dude.”
It’s hilarious – he’s constantly quoting lines *at* me,” John chuckled. He even busted out Uncle Jesse’s “have mercy” the other day! “But it’s all in good fun, you know? Just mocking around. It’s not like I think it’s *cool* or anything.”
Billy has started giving his dad feedback on his performances, and John admitted that while it’s inspiring, it’s also annoying.
John mentioned, “I’m performing Nightmare Before Christmas at the Hollywood Bowl,” and explained, “I was just trying to memorize the words. My son told me, ‘Dad, put a picture with it.’ And I just said, ‘Shut up.’”
Honestly, beyond all the fun stuff, Billy really went the extra mile for John as he prepared to play Lock. He had detailed notes on how John could approach the role, especially considering how brilliantly Paul Reubens brought the character to life in the original 1993 cartoon. It’s clear Billy wanted to help John really do the part justice!
John remembered singing in the car the night before, and his companion asked, ‘Are you going to use a different voice this time?’ He continued, ‘Are you going to go higher, and use more of a character voice?’
Even so, becoming a father later in life was particularly special for John, and also for former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum. This year, Matt passed on his support to John, working together to bring music education to students at Rosewood STEM Magnet Elementary School in Los Angeles through the Adopt the Arts Foundation. This partnership included Five for Fighting‘s John Ondrasik and his Let Music Fill My World charity.
Matt, 64, told TopMob that having children later in life is a unique experience. “It really changes your perspective,” he explained. “Now, the first thing we do when we wake up is focus on our child. It’s a fast-paced life-unlike when we used to sleep in a little longer.”
For me, what really stands out about John becoming a dad is how it’s opened up amazing new ways for him to bond with his son, Billy. The Beach Boys drummer himself has said he’s been so thrilled to share his love of music with Billy, and it’s just beautiful to see.
John said, “He really enjoys attending The Beach Boys concerts,” and he also loves rushing onto the stage. I advised him, ‘If you want to be up there playing, you’ll need to learn the tambourine part for “Good Vibrations.”’
Billy is truly dedicated to his work, going so far as to take drum lessons. However, while his son is fortunate enough to have these opportunities, John is aware that many children aren’t so lucky, and that’s why he’s thrilled to partner with Adopt the Arts.
“Some of these schools,” he said, “these kids don’t have music.”
That’s why John feels Adopt the Arts is so impactful. It’s not just about donating instruments; they also ensure music programs continue with a structured musical curriculum and ongoing activities.
“I’m really happy to be involved,” John said enthusiastically, explaining that he was most looking forward to visiting and playing music with the children. “Ultimately, that’s my main reason for doing what I do.”
