The initial photos from Channel 4‘s upcoming series, A Woman of Substance, have been revealed. This new adaptation is based on Barbara Taylor Bradford’s novel, which the channel previously brought to the screen back in 1984.
The two images, shown above and below, show how the character of Emma Harte has been portrayed at different times. Vera star Brenda Blethyn plays one version of Emma – without her familiar green raincoat or fisherman’s hat – while House of Guinness’s Jessica Reynolds portrays the character in the other.
The synopsis for the drama says: “1911. Emma Harte, an impoverished ambitious maid in Yorkshire, England, goes on a dizzying journey to become the world’s richest woman, gazing down from a sprawling luxury New York penthouse.
This story follows women who rose from humble beginnings throughout the 20th century. Emma boldly breaks the rules of her time, fearlessly questioning and overcoming the limitations placed upon her, shattering barriers, and remaining completely focused on her goal: reaching the top, no matter the cost.
This eight-episode series was crafted by the writers who brought you The Buccaneers, including the show’s creator, Katherine Jakeways, and Roanne Bardsley.

Although we don’t have a confirmed release date yet, the series-which was filmed in Yorkshire earlier this year-is expected to be released in 2026.
Joining the cast of the new adaptation of A Woman of Substance are Emmett J Scanlan (MobLand), Lydia Leonard (Wolf Hall), Leanne Best (This City Is Ours), Ewan Horrocks (The Last Kingdom), Harry Cadby (Everything Now), Will Mellor (Mr Bates vs the Post Office), and Lenny Rush (Doctor Who).
The cast will also include Niall Wright (Slow Horses), Robert Wilfort (Gavin & Stacey), Toby Regbo (Medici), Hiftu Quasem (The Witcher), Sophie Bould (Call the Midwife) and Georgina Sadler (Silo).
I still remember watching the original A Woman of Substance when it first aired! It was a huge deal for Channel 4 – their biggest drama ever, actually. And the cast was amazing! We had Jenny Seagrove, the legendary Deborah Kerr, Barry Bostwick, and even a young Liam Neeson. It was nominated for an Emmy, and for good reason – it was a really captivating story.
