A Marvel game is no longer available for purchase on PlayStation and Xbox consoles – including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X – as of 2013. However, if you already own the game, you can still play it as the online servers are still running. Plus, since the game is also available on Steam and mobile devices, it’s likely to remain playable for the foreseeable future. Even if the servers eventually shut down, you’ll still be able to enjoy the single-player and multiplayer aspects of the game.
The recently removed Marvel game is Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign, a match-3 puzzle game developed by Broken Circle Studios and published by D3 Publisher. 505 Games acquired D3 Publisher in 2022, and now manages the distribution of the Puzzle Quest series. Since taking over, they’ve made some unusual decisions, including removing most of the Puzzle Quest games-not just this one-from both the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store.
Marvel Licensing to Blame?
If Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign disappeared from all platforms, we’d likely assume it was due to the Marvel license expiring or the high cost of keeping the game’s servers running. However, because the game is still available on Steam and mobile, those explanations seem unlikely. It’s possible the game had a separate licensing deal specifically for consoles, which isn’t common but does happen. The game originally launched in 2013, but the console version didn’t arrive until 2015, meaning it’s been around for ten years-a typical length for a licensing agreement. Nevertheless, the fact that 505 Games has removed several other Puzzle Quest games, but not all of them, pretty much puts an end to all this guesswork.
Right now, we can only guess what happened because no one connected to the situation has spoken publicly or released a statement. We will update this story if we receive any official comments or information.
Given Marvel’s exciting future releases, fans likely won’t be too concerned about this removal. There are two big Marvel games scheduled for 2026. First, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is expected in early 2026, followed by Marvel’s Wolverine in fall 2026.
With that being said, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment with your thoughts, or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum.
