The PS5 has been available for almost five years, but the PS4 remains a significant presence in the gaming world.
Because so many people own it and it’s more affordable, Sony’s older console has lasted much longer than most, and developers continue to release new games for it even now. It has a truly enormous install base and remains a popular choice for gamers. You can find more information about its success online.
Well, it seems as though Sony might finally be taking steps to wind down support for PS4.
So, I was just reading Insider Gaming, and they’re reporting that Sony is going to be phasing out some older services for the console early next year. Basically, they’re shutting down some things that have been around for a while, which is always a little sad, but it sounds like it’s happening in the beginning of the new year. It’s definitely something to keep an eye on if you’re still using any of those legacy services.
According to documentation shared with them, Insider Gaming reports that these PS4 services will no longer be supported for any games released after Spring 2026:
- Activity Feed Web API
- Title Small Storage (TSS)
- Title User Storage (TUS)
- Users and Profiles
- Word Filters
- Shared Media Web API
According to the report, these features “aim to create a consistent and expandable base” that works well across different console versions.
Everything suggests Sony is starting to discontinue the platform, with the goal of moving PS4 players over to PS5.
Current and last-generation consoles are performing much more similarly than they used to. Even though the PS5 is selling very well and represents PlayStation’s most successful console generation to date, the PS4 continues to be popular, largely due to regular releases of games that are available on both systems.
We anticipate this pattern will likely persist when the PS6 is released in a few years. The new console will be the primary focus, and many games will also be available on the PS5. This dual release strategy seems likely to continue.
