Wolverine’s outfits are a perfect example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” However, many designers have attempted to improve upon his look, and those efforts usually don’t work out well. You really can’t go wrong with the classic blue and yellow or brown and tan suits, but changes are inevitable. Wolverine doesn’t always *need* a costume, but he still remains the main face of the X-Men. Seeing him in any of *these* costumes would ruin that iconic image. Not every design is going to be a hit, and that’s perfectly okay; not everything will appeal to everyone, bub.
Fortunately, most Wolverine costumes are pretty good. Usually, they’re just variations of the classic look, with different colors. We definitely wouldn’t tell him to his face if we didn’t like one-we wouldn’t want to become a shish kebab!
7) Black Outfit

The black suit Wolverine has been wearing in his current solo series feels really out of character for him. While it’s useful for stealth, a lot of the details just don’t quite fit. The face paint and gloves – which should really be full gauntlets – make it seem like Logan is having an off day. Just because it’s part of a well-known solo title doesn’t mean it’s a good look.
People have jokingly referred to his outfit as a “ninja” suit before, but that doesn’t quite fit his character. Although he appreciates Japanese culture, he’d be better represented as a shogun rather than a ninja. That’s why the costume always seemed a bit strange – it was just combining elements that worked for Wolverine. Luckily, he didn’t have to wear it for very long.
6) Marvel Rivals

The costume first shown in the video game Marvel Rivals has received a lot of criticism lately. While originally designed for the game, it now appears in official publications. Many feel it resembles a fan-made cosplay of Wolverine’s outfit rather than a professional, official costume.
This skin feels more approachable for those new to the game, but it doesn’t quite capture Wolverine’s essence. Wolverine is known for being tough and rugged; this version feels more like a biker trying to stand out. Ideally, we’d like to see this skin removed and replaced with a costume more faithful to the comic book version of Wolverine. That would solve two problems at once.
5) Armored Wolverine

Wolverine’s armored appearance when he lost his powers is really odd. It combined body armor with parts of his usual costume, but the design choices were questionable. Besides including a holster for a pistol and supposedly compensating for his lost healing ability, the suit was just not good. It’s a low point for dedicated Wolverine fans, particularly during the Uncanny Inhumans era of Marvel. This costume is best forgotten and left in the past, where it belongs. It was truly an awful look.
4) Fang

The “Fang” costume isn’t inherently poorly designed – it just doesn’t suit Wolverine very well. It actually feels more appropriate for Sabertooth, and it’s quite similar to what he’d wear. Although it served as the basis for the famous brown and tan costume created by John Byrne, it looks strange by today’s standards. The added bones and the missing cowl create an unbalanced look. This costume originated with the Shi’Ar, and it’s much more effective in a space setting, at the very least.
3) Ultimate X-Men

As a big Wolverine fan, I always found the original Ultimate costume a little… awkward for Logan. It borrows a lot from his classic “ninja” look, but feels way more standardized and less wild. I mean, if he wore it on his own, it’d be one thing, but it was supposed to be his *official* X-Men uniform! The stripes are a nice detail, I’ll admit, but the whole thing just feels off to me. It doesn’t quite capture his personality, you know? It’s a classic look, but not a favorite.
Many of the problems with this design weren’t just his fault. The issue stemmed from the entire Ultimate X-Men costume line. It seems like an attempt to align with the Fox films, but New X-Men handled this approach more effectively. Thankfully, we now have the new Ultimate Wolverine costume as a replacement.
2) Age of Apocalypse

Even though the Age of Apocalypse event is well-loved, this costume doesn’t quite hit the mark. The hair is messy and unkempt, and the outfit reverts to the familiar “ninja” style. The red stripes don’t really complement him, but the most noticeable flaw is the missing hand. It’s ironic that someone with supposedly unbreakable bones lost a hand so easily.
To make matters even worse, the fact that the claws can still originate from the lost hand feels like adding insult to injury. While the quick appearance of it in Deadpool and Wolverine was amusing, it’s mostly remembered as a comedic moment.
1) Feral

I’m really struggling to understand the design choices for the Feral costume. It shares many of the same problems as the Age of Apocalypse costume, specifically with the hair. Considering this version was supposed to be from his bone claw period, his transformation into a beast feels out of place. Even with the inclusion of past memories, the change happened far too quickly. And honestly, the wrapped mask only made the overall look even less appealing.
The costume makes him appear aggressive, but it feels more like it’s suiting a villain than his own personality. It was a strange period for everyone involved, and ultimately, it didn’t work out well. Let’s all just try to forget about this costume, shall we?
