10 Years Later, Dwayne Johnson’s Disaster Movie Is Now a Big Netflix Success

Dwayne Johnson, currently demonstrating his serious acting skills in The Smashing Machine, consistently delivered box office success throughout the 2010s. He began his rise to leading man status in the early 2000s with films like The Rundown, Walking Tall, and Doom, but it wasn’t until the following decade that Hollywood fully recognized his ability to carry big-budget films and justify their costs. Initially, he revitalized established franchises, appearing in Fast Five, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation within just three years. Later in the decade, he starred in several large-scale action movies that were built around his charisma and featured straightforward storylines.

Films like Hercules, Rampage, and Skyscraper were all financially successful. Beyond Skyscraper, another film achieved this: San Andreas. In fact, San Andreas continues to perform well, currently being popular on Netflix in both the U.S. and internationally.

Dwayne Johnson vs. Earthquake

As a film buff, I’ve been checking out the viewership numbers, and it’s pretty interesting! San Andreas is currently sitting at number three in the US for the week of September 22nd to 28th. It’s just behind KPop Demon Hunters and Ruth & Boaz. What’s really cool is that San Andreas is actually performing better than some newer 2025 releases like 28 Years Later, Karate Kid: Legends, The Wrong Paris, and Ice: Road Vengeance. The top ten is rounded out by some classics – Shrek, Shrek 2 – and 2023’s Cobweb, which is a horror movie with Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr from The Boys.

Looking at the global numbers, San Andreas isn’t doing quite as well as it is in the US – it’s still in the Top 10, but it’s currently at number seven. I’m glad to see it’s still beating out 28 Years Later, but it’s behind KPop Demon Hunters and Ruth & Boaz – those two are in the top spots, number one and two! It also falls below The Wrong Paris, the classic Denzel Washington action movie Man on Fire from 2004, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and even the 2014 Jeff Bridges fantasy film Seventh Son, which unfortunately didn’t do so well at the box office.

In San Andreas, Johnson stars as Ray Gaines, a top helicopter rescue pilot for the Los Angeles Fire Department. After a devastating earthquake demolishes the Hoover Dam, Gaines is dispatched to Nevada to save people trapped by the resulting floods. But when an even more powerful earthquake hits, completely wrecking Los Angeles, Gaines has to rush back home to find his estranged wife and daughter amidst the chaos. Along the way, his wife might realize that ending their marriage was a mistake, and that Gaines is a much stronger and more courageous man than her current partner.

Although the movie doesn’t rank among the very best from Johnson, it’s still a highly entertaining film with impressive visual effects, and it was especially enjoyable to watch in IMAX 3D. Released in 2015, the film proved to be a significant commercial success, earning $155.2 million within the United States and $319.4 million internationally, all while having a production budget of $110 million.
