Star Wars star Daisy Ridley is trading in her lightsaber for a powerful axe in her next film, where she’ll battle frightening enemies. Vertical has released a first look at the trailer for Zak Hilditch’s zombie thriller We Bury the Dead, which received very positive reactions after its premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (SXSW) in March. Currently, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given the film an 89% approval rating, making it a promising release to anticipate. Moviegoers in the United States should mark Jan. 2, 2026, on their calendars, as that’s when the film-and the undead-will arrive in theaters.
In We Bury the Dead, Ridley plays Ava Newman, a woman driven to find her husband after a disastrous military experiment destroys the landscape. When the experiment goes wrong, Ava joins a team that collects bodies, hoping to find him among the casualties. However, her search takes a terrifying turn as the corpses she handles begin to show signs of life. The trailer (seen below) suggests a thrilling and frightening experience, filled with horrors as Ava continues her rescue mission. The film explores difficult themes like grief, loss, and the undead.
We Bury the Dead is the latest film from Zak Hilditch, the director of critically praised movies like the Stephen King adaptation 1922 and the apocalyptic thriller These Final Hours. This time, Hilditch not only directs but also wrote the script for this horror film, which appears set to solidify his talent for making dark and emotionally impactful scary movies. The story centers on Ava’s difficult experiences, and she’s joined by a strong cast including Brenton Thwaites (Titans), Mark Coles Smith (Beast of War), and Matt Whelan (Narcos).
