Who Are Max Martin & Shellback? Meet Taylor Swift’s Showgirl Producers

As a lifestyle expert, I can tell you that when Max Martin and Shellback signed on as producers for The Life of a Showgirl, the Swifties – Taylor’s dedicated fanbase – immediately sensed something big was happening. They just *knew* things were about to get interesting, and honestly, a little bit chaotic! It was a clear signal that this project would be different.

The Swedish musicians joined forces with Taylor Swift as the only featured artists on her upcoming album, releasing October 3rd-and this wasn’t the first time they’d collaborated with the famous singer.

Actually, Martin and Shellback played a key role in creating many of her biggest radio successes, such as “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” and “22.”

That’s precisely why people are anticipating The Life of a Showgirl to be incredible. Even Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift’s fiancé, called the 12 new songs absolute “bangers” when she appeared on his New Heights podcast in August.

During the episode, Swift explained, “We hadn’t previously created an album with just the three of us.” She described the experience as feeling like capturing a truly special and fleeting moment, saying, “It honestly felt like catching lightning in a bottle.”

Let’s talk about Max Martin and Shellback – who are these incredibly talented music producers? We’re diving into the story of the team that Taylor Swift credited with creating the The Life of a Showgirl‘s “catchy and memorable songs.”

Who are Max Martin and Shellback?

Martin and Shellback are Swedish producers and songwriters who’ve collaborated with some of the biggest artists in the world. Shellback, age 40, has earned four Grammy Awards, and Martin, 54, has won five. They were also Oscar-nominated in 2016 for writing Justin Timberlake’s hit song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” which was featured in the Trolls film.

Last year, Martin-the creative force behind the 2019 musical & Juliet-achieved a historic milestone. He set a new record for the most number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for any music producer.

But despite all their successes in showbiz, Martin doesn’t think he’s very business-minded.

I’ve always believed that the moment you start overthinking things, it really impacts the music. As I told PopJustice back in 2009, my focus is simply on making the best songs *I* can – songs that resonate with my own taste. And honestly, I think my personal preferences often align with what others, like radio programmers, are looking for too. It’s about creating something authentic that I genuinely love, and hoping that connection translates to a wider audience.

“Music should be enjoyable and uplifting,” Martin explained. “You really need to feel passionate about it. If I were just doing it as a job, solely for the money, I doubt I’d still be making music.”

What are Max Martin and Shellback’s real names?

Born Karl Martin Sandberg in 1971, Martin began his musical journey as a teenager in the 1980s with the metal band It’s Alive. He left high school to focus on music, and later signed with Cheiron Records. This label was founded by Swedish DJ Denniz PoP, who, as noted by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, also gave Martin the stage name Max Martin.

Regarding Shellback, his given name is Karl Johan Schuster. He was born in Sweden in 1985 and initially played the drums in a rock band. He met Martin in the early 2000s, around the time he turned 16.

How are Max Martin and Shellback involved in Taylor Swift’s album The Life of a Showgirl?

Martin and Shellback are the only people Swift worked with on The Life of a Showgirl, assisting her with both writing and production of her 12th album. She brought them on board for their fourth collaboration while she was in Sweden for her Eras Tour in May 2024.

While I was performing in Stockholm, I invited Max Martin to the show and we started talking. I told him I felt like we could create something amazing if we went back into the studio, she explained on New Heights. I basically said I wanted to be just as proud of the new album as I am of the Eras Tour, and he pointed out, ‘Do you realize how much pressure that puts on us?’

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve learned that even superstars need balance! Taylor would power through three shows back-to-back, and then hop on a flight to Sweden. She’d use those three days to recharge and get some work done on her album – talk about multi-tasking! It’s a smart way to manage an incredibly demanding schedule, ensuring she has time for both performing and creative work. Finding that balance is key, even when you’re Taylor Swift!

“This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant,” she explained. “My main goals were melodies that were so infectious that you’re almost angry at it. And lyrics that are just as vivid but crisp and focused and completely intentional. I feel like we actually came together in a really beautiful way.”

How are Max Martin and Shellback involved in Taylor Swift’s album The Life of a Showgirl?

Martin and Shellback worked with Swift as the sole contributors on The Life of a Showgirl, assisting her with both the writing and production of her 12th album

While I was performing in Stockholm, I invited Max Martin to the show and we started talking. I told him I thought we could create something amazing if we worked together again,” she shared on New Heights when describing how she approached him last spring. “I basically explained that I wanted to be just as proud of my next album as I am of the Eras Tour, and he pointed out, ‘Do you realize how much pressure that puts on us?’

Therefore, Swift would give three consecutive performances before traveling to Sweden for a three-day break to focus on her album.

She described the album as a reflection of her private emotional experiences during the tour, which she remembered as being full of energy and excitement. “I really wanted to create songs with melodies that would get stuck in your head-almost annoyingly so,” she said. “And I aimed for lyrics that were equally powerful, but clear, concise, and carefully thought out.” She added that she felt the team had collaborated wonderfully.

What songs have Max Martin and Shellback made with Taylor Swift previously?

This group has collaborated for more than ten years, starting with Red. They created the hits “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” and “22” for their 2012 album.

As a longtime fan, I remember when Taylor Swift really dove into pop music with 1989 in 2014. That album gave us some of her biggest songs – I mean, who could forget “Blank Space,” “Style,” “Shake It Off,” “Bad Blood” and “Wildest Dreams”? It wasn’t just those hits either; 1989 also included amazing tracks like “All You Had to Do Was Stay,” “How You Get the Girl,” “Wonderland” and “New Romantics.” I still listen to them all the time!

Their musical collaboration carried on with her 2017 album Reputation, as they worked together on the songs “End Game,” “I Did Something Bad,” “Don’t Blame Me,” “Delicate,” “So It Goes…,” “King of My Heart” and “Dancing with Our Hands Tied.”

Following this, Swift largely worked with Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner on her albums folklore (2020), evermore (2020), Midnights (2022), and The Tortured Poets Department (2024). This made *Showgirl* a bit of a return to the style of music she first became known for.

What songs have Max Martin and Shellback made with Taylor Swift previously?

The trio have been working together for over a decade, beginning with 2012’s Red when they penned the songs “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “22.”

When Taylor Swift fully embraced the pop music scene in 2014 with 1989, it launched some of her most popular songs. These included “Blank Space,” “Style,” “Shake It Off,” “Bad Blood,” and “Wildest Dreams,” along with tracks like “All You Had to Do Was Stay,” “How You Get the Girl,” “Wonderland,” and “New Romantics.”

Their musical collaboration continued on her 2017 album Reputation, with them working together on the songs “End Game,” “I Did Something Bad,” “Don’t Blame Me,” “Delicate,” “So It Goes…,” “King of My Heart” and “Dancing with Our Hands Tied.”

Following this, Swift mainly worked with Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner on her albums folklore (2020), evermore (2020), Midnights (2022), and The Tortured Poets Department (2024), which makes Showgirl feel like a revisit to her earlier style.

What has Taylor Swift said about working with Max Martin and Shellback?

The “Anti-Hero” singer has been effusive with her admiration for the artists.

I always wonder, how does Max Martin come up with those melodies that just get stuck in your head?!” I remember reading that’s what I asked Billboard back at the 2012 iHeartRadio Music Festival. And honestly, it’s true – getting to witness his process as a writer is so much fun.

After the fantastic music on 1989 won her three Grammy Awards in 2016, Swift was careful to acknowledge the contributions of others.

“I mainly want to thank my co-executive producer, Max Martin,” she stated on stage, “who truly deserves to have been recognized up here for the past 25 years.”

Earlier this year, Taylor Swift called Martin her “mentor” and shared that the songs they’ve created with Shellback are “some of my favorite songs that I’ve ever done before.” She explained that working with him again on The Life of a Showgirl felt like “catching lightning in a bottle,”, as the 35-year-old described it.

Oh my gosh, hearing her talk about it just *gets* me! She said it felt like all three of them – her and the guys – were feeling the same huge responsibility as artists, and it was just so special. She was on New Heights, and she explained how much it meant to her to have this chance to be creative, knowing they all had to bring their absolute best ideas to the table. She even admitted she was putting a lot of pressure on this new record by saying that, but she doesn’t even care! Can you believe it? She just loves it *that* much, and honestly, same! It’s everything.

Even so, she acknowledges that their recording method is somewhat unusual. Back in 1989, Taylor Swift shared a glimpse of the three of them recording backing vocals and making a rhythm by stomping their feet on a wooden board.

As she quipped, “It might not be what you expect us to look like in the studio.”

Who else have Max Martin and Shellback collaborated with in the music industry?

I’m pretty sure you’ve already heard a lot of their music! They’ve collaborated with so many amazing artists – like Britney Spears, Kesha, Usher, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, and Adam Lambert, just to name a few. They’ve worked with a ton of hitmakers, honestly!

Martin has an impressive record, having co-written 27 songs that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His success began in 1998 with Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time.” He continued creating hits with *NSYNC, including “It’s Gonna Be Me,” and with Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” He also played a key role in the early success of Katy Perry, co-writing popular songs like “I Kissed a Girl,” “Teenage Dream,” “California Gurls,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Roar,” and “Dark Horse.”

In recent years, Martin has been busy featuring The Weeknd in his work, including the songs “Can’t Feel My Face,” “Blinding Lights,” and “Save Your Tears,” which were released between 2015 and 2021.

Shellback contributed to several popular songs, including Maroon 5‘s “Payphone,” “Animals,” and “Moves Like Jagger.” He also worked with Selena Gomez‘s husband, Benny Blanco, on tracks like Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea‘s “Problem,” and Cher Lloyd‘s “Want U Back”.

The two artists collaborated on several popular songs, including P!nk‘s “Raise Your Glass,” “So What,” and “Fkin’ Perfect,” and also contributed to Adele‘s “Send My Love (To Your New Lover).”

Are Max Martin and Shellback married, dating or single?

Martin is said to be married to Jenny Petersson, but they generally keep to themselves. She’s only joined him at a handful of high-profile events, such as his 2017 induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the premiere of his Broadway musical & Juliet in 2022, and the 2023 Tony Awards, where the show was up for Best Musical.

Shellback keeps his personal life private and hasn’t shared whether he’s in a relationship. Although his Instagram account is private, notable followers include Adam Levine, Harry Styles and Charlie Puth, among the 1,100 people he follows. Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake are also among his followers.

With the premiere of The Life of a Showgirl getting closer, here’s a recap of everything Taylor Swift shared during her time on the New Heights podcast.

According to how their relationship began, Travis Kelce first caught Taylor Swift‘s attention when he talked about being unable to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it. He mentioned this on an episode of the New Heights podcast in July 2023, while discussing the Eras Tour concert at Arrowhead Stadium.

You know, from what I’m hearing, Taylor says Travis didn’t even reach out to her team to try and arrange a meeting initially. It seems like he didn’t go through the proper channels to even *begin* the conversation, which is a little surprising! It’s all about making those first moves, and apparently, that didn’t happen on his end.

She jokingly recalled in an August 2025 New Heights episode that he assumed he could simply chat with the elevator operator to gain access to her dressing room. “He genuinely acted as if knowing someone would be enough,” she said, “like he could just ‘figure it out.'”

As for the friendship bracelet, Taylor said she’s still “never seen the original.”

Travis explained the precise moment he realized he wanted to pursue Taylor romantically. He shared on his podcast that if he hadn’t attended that show and been completely captivated, and subsequently felt a strong desire to meet her, he wouldn’t have publicly aired his grievances about something later. He said, “If I would have never gone to that show and been mesmerized and just been captivated, and then left with such a desire to want to meet you, I would have never went on here and told everybody how butt hurt I was.”

You know, as someone who observes relationships, I’ve always been fascinated by instant connection. This athlete perfectly described what it’s like to be captivated by someone – he said he was so engulfed in the curiosity about Taylor. He explained that seeing her ignite an entire stadium with energy was amazing, but then, when they were alone, it felt like he’s known her forever. It’s that shift from public spectacle to intimate familiarity that really highlights a powerful connection, don’t you think? It’s like the energy of a crowd just melts away, and it’s just…pure connection.

It was a sentiment shared by Taylor, who responded, “I felt the same exact way about you.”

“Whatever Andy Reid says, we’re gonna stand by,” Taylor responded. “That’s what happened.”

She shared that her father, Scott Swift, has been friends with the Kansas City Chiefs coach for a long time. Because of this, Andy has been attending her concerts for years.

Taylor said her dad “is the most social man who’s ever been born,” and she’s “always had a really positive vibe” when she’s around Andy.

I wasn’t familiar with the sports he played, but I recognized him as my dad’s friend, Andy Reid,” she explained. “Looking back, I realize he’s become the most iconic and legendary coach of all time.”

Honestly, when it came down to it, Andy really championed Travis – and a lot of Taylor’s inner circle also spoke highly of him after he took the plunge and made his move on New Heights. I’ve seen this happen a lot – a little support from the right people can make all the difference!

I remember my cousins were practically begging me, saying, ‘Please, please, please, he’s amazing!’” Taylor recalled. It was so strange – I kept hearing people whispering about him, and honestly, that’s just not something that usually happens to me. It was incredible to see how many people were willing to stand up for him, to really go to bat for him. It meant a lot.

The Grammy-winning artist shared that she stumbled when she tried to ask the Kansas City Chiefs tight end a question about football on their first date. It was a bit awkward!

Taylor remembered asking him about what the Super Bowl was like when the Chiefs played the Eagles. He looked across the field, and Taylor said, “saw his brother standing five feet away.”

After two years, Taylor admitted it was a bit of a crazy question to ask, considering the brothers never played on the field together at the same time because of where they played. However, she shared that Travis took the time to patiently explain the game to her, which sparked her love for the sport.

She remembered him saying, ‘To be clear, I’m playing offense, and so is my brother. I’m only on the field when the defense is out there.’ She explained that she had always assumed everyone played at the same time.

When Taylor announced her 12th album is scheduled to release on Oct. 3, 2025, she explained that she intentionally chose only 12 songs for The Life of a Showgirl. She wanted to maintain a high standard and ensure the album felt complete and unified in its theme (and confirmed that no additional songs will be released).

The inspiration was about going “behind the curtain” of the Eras Tour.

Taylor explained that this album reflected her private emotional experiences while on tour, describing that time as full of energy, excitement, and life.

She explained, “This album really captures the incredibly happy, energetic, and passionate headspace I was in at the time. That bubbly feeling is definitely present throughout the record.”

When Taylor wasn’t performing on tour, she collaborated with successful songwriters Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden. Together, they crafted these catchy and popular songs, including the song that opens the Eras Tour, featuring Sabrina Carpenter.

Besides “The Life of a Showgirl,” the album will include these tracks: “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Elizabeth Taylor,” “Opalite,” “Father Figure,” “Eldest Daughter,” “Ruin the Friendship,” “Actually Romantic,” “Wi$h Li$t,” “Wood,” “Cancelled!” and “Honey.”

The football player really enjoyed the singer’s 12 songs, calling them “bangers” and saying he’s listened to each one. Jason, on the other hand, hasn’t heard any of the tracks yet, but playfully mentioned wanting to listen to the album before it comes out on Oct. 3.

Taylor pointed out that a really positive sign is Travis having the same friends since he was a young child – likely around 4 years old. She emphasized he’s exceptionally good at keeping up those friendships, is very loyal, and his friends are just as loyal to him.

After spending time with his friends in the NFL suite at Arrowhead Stadium, she remarked, “They are the funniest and most entertaining group of guys.”

And Taylor’s game day behavior impressed Travis, too.

Let’s talk about good signs in a relationship, shall we? I was chatting with someone the other day, and he told me this great story. Apparently, on the very first game date – a Bears game – his date went straight through the front door, even though it was a general admission event. It just shows you how unpretentious and down-to-earth she was!

That gesture instantly showed him she was excited to join the Chiefs community: “I just thought, ‘Okay, she’s fully on board. She’s up for anything. She’s here to enjoy herself.’”

Something else Taylor loves about her NFL player boyfriend? He didn’t make her feel bad for not knowing much about football.

“You’re so accepting of others, and you didn’t criticize me for being clueless about your world,” she said to Travis. “I honestly didn’t even know what a first down was. I didn’t know what a tight end was either.”

You know, Travis did say he’s forever thankful for me getting into football, saying I really “dived in” wholeheartedly. But honestly? I think I did a little more than just dip my toe in! It’s been a full immersion, and I’m loving every minute. Football has become a huge part of my life, and it’s been amazing to experience it with him.

“I became obsessed with it,” she said. “My friends were like, ‘Who body snatched you?'”

Travis’ brother and cohost Jason Kelce became emotional when Taylor described Travis as a “human exclamation point,” explaining that his personality is like “when you take a photo on your phone and use the color enhancement feature.”

“That’s how you impact everyone’s life,” Taylor said, as Jason smiled and seemed to be moved. “I’m using a lot more exclamation points these days.”

Taylor joked that all her hobbies are things people enjoyed back in the 1700s. She explained, “I enjoy sewing-I make children’s purses and baby blankets. I also love to paint and cook.”

Actually, she confessed to going through a new baking phase every six months, and right now, sourdough has completely taken over her life – that’s what she shared while the episode was being recorded.

Taylor shared that she frequently bakes bread and often texts her friends, asking if they’d like some. “I spend a lot of time looking at sourdough recipes online,” she said. “It turns out there’s a whole online community of people who do the same thing, and I just discovered it!”

The “Blank Space” singer recently talked about her passion for baking, explaining that she’s been developing a new type of sourdough bread. She’s making it for Kylie Kelce and her husband Jason’s children: Wyatt, Elliotte, Bennett, and Finnley.

I’ve been developing a recipe for my daughters, since they’re obsessed with rainbows,” she said. “It’s Funfetti sourdough. They just adore sprinkles, so we add them to everything when we spend time together.”

Besides hitting it off with Jason’s children, Taylor also connected with them over her cats: Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson, and Benjamin Button.

Honestly, it was such a fun challenge! My biggest mission was getting my kids to understand the cats weren’t dangerous – you know, proving they weren’t poisonous. And I knew exactly how to do it! I just had to let them meet Benjamin, my sweet rag-doll. He’s so gentle; he literally lets anyone hold him like he’s a baby! It was the perfect way to show them they had nothing to fear.

In May 2025, Taylor Swift purchased the original recordings of her first six albums-Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation-after working for years to regain ownership of them.

Prior to finalizing the agreement with Shamrock Capital, the singer of “Bad Blood” had her mother, Andrea Swift, and brother, Austin Swift, manage the talks, choosing to do so “rather than send lawyers or management.”

“I’m in the business of human emotion, so I would so much rather lead heart-first in something like this,” she tearfully explained, “because to me this isn’t something like, ‘I want to own this asset because of its return.’ I want it because these are my handwritten diary entries from my whole life.”

Taylor explained that her family had shared with Shamrock a history of attempts to purchase the property – detailing every time a deal had fallen apart. They described instances where they’d made plans and believed they had an agreement, only for it to fail right before completion. It was a frustrating pattern, she said.

She explained that there are certain things she will and won’t do. “I will never include a hidden message, or ‘Easter egg,’ that relates to my private life,” she said. “These will always be connected to my music, or something I’m working on.”

Although she playfully confessed that creating these clues has become “a little Zodiac killer”-like, Taylor stated she’ll continue to share them as long as her fans are having fun.

She explained that she envisions Easter eggs as something for dedicated fans. If you’re not part of the fandom and just want to enjoy the music normally, you wouldn’t even notice them. “If you know, you know,” she added.

According to Taylor, the idea of having Travis join her on stage all started out as a “bit.”

She described it as a thought that started as a playful, ‘wouldn’t it be funny if…’ idea. “But as we discussed it,” she continued, “I noticed a little sparkle in [his] eye.”

But for Travis, it was anything but a joke. As he noted, “I was serious in a terrifying fashion.”

The singer behind the hit song “Cruel Summer” created her 12th studio album while on the European part of her Eras Tour, working with producers Max Martin and Shellback. Taylor explained that she would travel to Sweden to record whenever she had a few days off between concerts.

She explained that this album reflected her private emotional experiences during the tour, which she described as full of energy, excitement, and life.

That’s why Taylor said the album is filled with “bangers.”

Honestly, this album really reflects where I was at in my life – a totally joyful, energetic, and even a little chaotic place! That feeling of effervescence just naturally poured into the music, and I think you can really hear it on this record. It was a truly transformative time, and I wanted to capture that raw energy.

She shared that the album cover-photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, the same photographers who worked with her on the reputation photoshoot-showed how she felt after relaxing in a bath at the end of the day following an Eras Tour show.

Oh my god, she *actually* said it! She was thinking about how we’re all going to be up until 4 AM after everything, just *obsessing* over the show like I am! But she gets it, you know? It’s like she understands we had to endure so much just to *watch* her – it was a total obstacle course just getting tickets and everything! And she acknowledged we did it! She said we got two wins in a row, but she specifically said we did it tonight. It’s like she was talking *directly* to me! I can’t even breathe!

The singer requested a photo showing a more candid, “behind the scenes” look, rather than a glamorous stage persona, explaining that “this album focuses on my personal struggles away from the spotlight, not what happened on stage. It truly reflects the lyrical themes and meaning of the album.”

Even though the album cover is a fresh, minty green and features Taylor in a swimming pool, she explained that the Life of a Showgirl period is represented by the color orange to reflect its cheerful and bright feeling.

It really captures the energy of what I’ve been going through,” she reflected. “And this album is about the private, internal experiences I had while on tour – a time that was so full of energy, excitement, and life.”

“We don’t,” she stated directly. “Whatever you expose your mind to, it will absorb. But anything you share online, it will destroy. I’ve worked in the music business for 20 years. It’s difficult to offend me at this point.”

Taylor jokingly pointed out, “A story can be about me, even include my name in the title, and I still might not be involved in it.”

The singer explained she’s been working on creating a healthy balance by limiting her time on social media, saying she’s been trying to “mediate a really healthy relationship with not seeing a whole lot.” She added, “I do detach from the internet in a huge way.”

Taylor explained that she spent the summer of 2025 caring for her dad after he had a quintuple bypass. She described him as the “loveliest patient ever” and said he’s been doing “incredibly well” since the surgery.

He was at his absolute funniest-which is saying a lot, because he’s normally hilarious,” she said, describing how he acted after his surgery. “He had no idea how many blockages he actually had, and I told him, ‘Dad, you had a quintuple bypass-five blockages! That’s incredible, even more than we expected.’ And he responded with, ‘Well, you see, I grew up in a very competitive family.’”

Andrea has also been “doing great” after getting a new knee this summer, according to Taylor.

“They’re two people I’m incredibly close to, and I love them very much,” the Miss Americana star said about her parents. “Getting to spend so much time with them this summer was truly one of the best experiences of my life. It allowed for those deeper conversations you don’t usually have when you’re only together for a short time.”

“I absolutely deny that!” she responded to the story claiming she wore a bear costume in the 2025 Adam Sandler comedy, which also featured Travis. “I’m flattered they even considered me for that role, as I was a huge fan of the film.”

Taylor added, “Whoever did the bear’s acting was exquisite.”

Her favorite moment from watching the guy on the Chiefs actually involved his mom Donna Kelce.

I remember being in the suite when Travis won the AFC Championship,” Taylor said. “We were all incredibly excited, with everyone yelling. Then his mom said, ‘Okay, let’s head down to the field.’ And I was so surprised – I asked, ‘Really? What do you mean?'”

Taylor mentioned that she and Travis hadn’t talked about her coming onto the field before the moment happened, so she was a little concerned that Travis would be surprised and think, “What are you doing here, dude?”

“[Donna] was like, ‘Trust me he wants you there,'” she remembered. “And I was like, ‘OK, well, she would know.'”

Ultimately, Taylor is happy she listened to Donna and was able to have that “magical” time with Travis-despite being surprised by “never having seen this many cameras” before.
