I have to say, author Diana Gabaldon has created such a rich world with Outlander! Over the seven seasons we’ve had so far, it’s been filled with characters I’ve truly connected with – some I adore, some I despise, and others I just love to hate. Of course, everyone loves Claire and Jamie Fraser, along with their family and friends, and that definitely includes Lord John Grey, the British officer who became a great friend to them decades ago. Fans, myself included, have been begging for a spinoff series focused on him for years! Now that an Outlander executive producer has explained why Blood of My Blood got the green light first, I’m starting to understand their decision-making process, and I’m actually okay with it.
Why Is Outlander: Blood Of My Blood The First Spinoff?
The 2025 TV season not only brought us the second half of Outlander Season 7, but also introduced the first season of Outlander: Blood of My Blood. This prequel spin-off tells the story of Claire and Jamie’s parents as they explore Scotland in the early 1700s and navigate the challenges of unexpected time travel.
The series has definitely given us plenty of steamy romantic scenes and episodes that could rank among the best in the Outlander franchise. It’s been exploring the backstories of younger characters from the original show, along with introducing some new faces. However, one character we haven’t seen is Lord John Grey (played by David Berry). Fans have been hoping for a spinoff series focused on him ever since his significant role in Season 3, but it hasn’t happened yet. Recently, showrunner and executive producer Maril Davis explained the reason to Radio Times, and I now understand their reasoning. As she stated:
We’re still interested in developing the Lord John series, so it remains a potential project – it just wasn’t the ideal moment. [Blood of My Blood] felt like a logical next step. The opportunity to tell another compelling love story, focusing on Jamie and Claire’s parents, and to weave it alongside their own romance, was simply too good to ignore.
Sigh…Okay, Maril. You know what? I get their point now. I still don’t have to be happy about it, though!
Just so everyone knows, I’m really enjoying Blood of My Blood. The actors playing the younger versions of the characters look strikingly similar to Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan (who play their older counterparts), which is fantastic. Plus, the show is exactly what we need right now – a visually stunning, emotionally intense, and wonderfully romantic period drama to tide us over until the next season of Outlander.
The backstories of Julia and Henry Beauchamp (Claire’s parents) and Ellen and Brian Fraser (Jamie’s parents) were mostly invented for OBOMB. The writers even altered details from the original show to allow for this new series. In contrast, fans have already seen quite a bit of Lord John’s adventures over several seasons, and there are also a number of novellas and novels focusing on his story.
Having enjoyed those stories myself, I’ve always thought Lord John deserved his own TV series. However, I understand why revisiting Claire and Jamie’s parents-especially with Outlander’s time travel element-felt like an opportunity they couldn’t miss. It was a great way to remind fans of what they loved about the early seasons of Outlander, which is wonderful as the original show approaches its conclusion. Also, it allows for more epic love stories, while the Lord John stories are more like historical mysteries and only share a similar time period with the main drama.
Okay, so here’s the good news: there might still be a chance we’ll get a Lord John series down the line! Honestly, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we eventually have something to anticipate. Let’s all just hope it happens, shall we?
