I just finished watching the new crime drama, Borderline, and it’s a real nail-biter. The story kicks off when a body turns up right on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. What I found particularly interesting is how the show forces two police officers – who are normally on opposite sides – to team up and solve the case. It’s a clever setup that creates a lot of tension and makes for compelling viewing. You can find more information about the show here.
Just like many successful detective partnerships, these two investigators have very different approaches to solving crimes. Eoin Macken and Amy De Bhrún play the roles of these clashing detectives, and the series has now been picked up by ITV for audiences to enjoy.
Even though the series first came out last year, a lot of viewers will be watching it now that it’s available on ITV1 and ITVX. The episodes explore crimes happening in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and the show also features beautiful scenery from both countries. It’s a visually stunning and gripping drama. You won’t want to miss it!
But where exactly was Borderline filmed? Read on to find out.
Where was Borderline filmed?

The movie Borderline was shot on location in County Louth, Republic of Ireland, with the town of Dundalk serving as the primary filming location. Production occurred throughout the summer of 2023, from June to September.
ShinAwiL and Further South Productions created the series, with support from Screen Ireland and Lionsgate Television. Lionsgate handled international distribution, and the show, titled Borderline, first aired on MGM+ last year in the UK and Ireland.
In an interview with Drama Quarterly, executive producer Larry Bass, series producer Mary Callery, and Further South executive producer Steve November discussed the series’ location. They explained that the production was based in Louth, just a few miles south of the border. This allowed them to film the entire show in the actual locations where the story is set, utilizing landscapes that aren’t often seen on screen. They emphasized the benefit of shooting in little-used and lesser-known areas.
They explained further: “The complex interactions seen in international politics and teamwork are also reflected behind the scenes. Borderline is a unique collaboration, bringing together a production company from the UK (Further South Productions) and one from Ireland (Shinawil) to create an English-language drama intended for a German broadcaster (ZDF) and distributed in the US by Lionsgate.”
Fortunately, things generally go more easily between those who work together on projects than they do between Boyd and Regan.
What is Borderline about?
Here’s what the story Borderline is about: Detective Inspector Philip Boyd, a by-the-book officer from Northern Ireland, is paired with Detective Inspector Aoife Regan, who’s known for her strong language, from the Republic of Ireland. Despite their initial dislike for each other and their differing approaches, they must overcome their personal and professional conflicts to investigate a series of violent crimes happening near the border.
