Originally, Sam Raimi was set to direct Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire, but the project didn’t work out. This led Sony to start over with The Amazing Spider-Man (featuring Andrew Garfield), and then they rebooted Spider-Man again after making a unique agreement with Disney to include the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (with Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man). It appeared Maguire’s time as the web-slinger was over, but 14 years after Spider-Man 3, he returned to the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The positive reaction to that MCU film sparked conversations about a new Spider-Man movie starring Maguire. Now, one of his fellow actors has shared their thoughts on the matter.
I was listening to The Supes Show, and Kirsten Dunst was talking about potentially coming back for Spider-Man 4. It got me really excited! She said she’d love to do it, and she’s hoping they’d explore a specific idea if they did. She was like, “That would be cool, right? I mean, I don’t know if the fans are into it.” But she thinks it’d be an interesting story – her and Tobey Maguire reprising our roles, but this time with kids. I totally agree – that would be amazing!
How Spider-Man: Brand New Day Could Set Up Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4
Initially, Kirsten Dunst’s statements seem like hopeful speculation, but the MCU might actually make this version of Spider-Man 4 possible. Since Sadie Sink joined the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there’s been a lot of discussion about what role she’ll play. One popular theory suggests she could be Mayday Parker, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s daughter in the Marvel Comics. What makes this rumor even more compelling is the idea that Sink’s Mayday would be the child of Maguire and Watson’s versions of Peter and MJ. If this turns out to be true, it could pave the way for Spider-Man 4.
Throughout the Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios has often cast well-known actors in comic book roles, but then hasn’t developed those characters further (as seen in the many MCU post-credits scenes that didn’t lead anywhere). Introducing Sink as Mayday Parker could remind fans of other underused actors, like Charlize Theron as Clea or Harry Styles as Eros. However, it seems unlikely Marvel would so clearly reference the Raimi Spider-Man series and Brand New Day storyline unless they have significant plans for Mayday Parker going forward. If fans were introduced to Peter and MJ’s daughter only to have that storyline abandoned after a single film, it would be incredibly frustrating – perhaps even more so than never seeing Brett Goldstein’s Hercules again. Considering the mixed reactions to many Multiverse Saga projects, Marvel likely wants to avoid upsetting fans with another dropped storyline.
Introducing Mayday Parker, a character from another universe, might not quite fit with the goal of Spider-Man: Brand New Day to tell a down-to-earth, street-level story. However, the movie’s main plot could still remain relatively focused, even if it includes elements from the multiverse. It’s still a large-scale comic book movie, and because Brand New Day is the last film scheduled before Avengers: Doomsday, it could incorporate some multiverse ideas to begin setting up the upcoming battle with Doctor Doom. While no Spider-Man actors are confirmed for Doomsday yet, it’s difficult to imagine Avengers: Secret Wars happening without any wall-crawlers involved. Mayday’s potential appearance in Brand New Day could pave the way for her to reappear in the final chapter of the Multiverse Saga.
Naturally, Mayday is only one character Sadie Sink might play, but it’s potentially the most interesting. Given Holland’s Peter wants to honor his “older selves,” it would be a fun twist if he teamed up with the daughter of one of his alternate versions, offering a new direction for the MCU. And if Sink’s performance is a hit, bringing her back for a Spider-Man 4 where Peter and MJ navigate raising their superpowered daughter would be a safe bet. With Secret Wars poised to shake things up, a long-awaited Spider-Man sequel focusing on the next generation could be a major success for Marvel as they plan their future stories.
