People watching Strictly Come Dancing are disagreeing about the feedback Shirley Ballas gave to Lewis Cope after his Jive performance. Some viewers feel her comments were too harsh, while others believe they were fair and constructive.
Lewis, along with his professional partner Katya Jones, delivered a polished performance set to Get Ready by The Temptations. While Ballas acknowledged the song’s “melody” was “refined and soft”, she felt the dance itself came across as “aggressive”.
Despite the audience’s disapproval, she encouraged them to be patient while she continued offering guidance to the dancing pair.
She continued: “If you never worked on power another day in your life, then do yourself a favour, your gifted in it. You can jump, you can split, you can tick all those boxes but then when you get hold of your lady there’s something like a long neck, there is something like posture.
I’m not suggesting it needs to be flawless. When you draw a line, even a really rough one, it can still be visually appealing. So, for you Katya, when he discusses refinement, that’s precisely what he’s referring to.
He’s referring to the graceful, swan-like quality of your neck. I truly admire your strength and believe you have the potential to win this competition. However, unlike others, I don’t anticipate a dramatic or explosive performance – I see something more subtle and refined.

Following Ballas’s remarks, one person posted on X: “Shirley is absolutely right about the song selections”, and another commented: “Lewis did a fantastic job, he’s a performer who can both act and dance.”
Even with some negative feedback, Lewis and Katya earned a solid 27 points, which was only one point lower than what they achieved last weekend. This shows they performed quite consistently, despite the criticism.
Because scores from previous weeks were added in, Lewis and Katya are currently leading the week two leaderboard with 55 points – but will this be enough to keep them out of the dance-off?
Tonight, public voting on Strictly will begin, and viewers will decide which of the 2025 contestants will continue in the competition for one more week. It’s up to the public to choose who stays!
