10 Actors Who Were Replaced For Huge Movie Sequels

There are many reasons why actors don’t return for a sequel. It’s rarely because they became popular after the first film. Usually, it comes down to money or whether they’re willing to work well with others. These are the well-known actors in franchises who were in the original but didn’t stay for the entire run. However, there were a few exceptions. First, if an actor died and was replaced – like Harry Potter’s Richard Harris and Michael Gambon – they weren’t included. And, it had to be a situation where two actors played the *same* character. We didn’t include cases where an actor left and their character was simply written out, or replaced with a completely new character who had a similar amount of screen time. Finally, reboots didn’t count – for example, James Bond and Spider-Man have been recast with each new iteration.

In most of the cases below, the new actor actually improved things. Also, the reasons why the original actor left the franchise are usually pretty clear. Let’s look at each situation individually.

10) Mark Ruffalo Replaced Edward Norton in The Avengers

The Incredible Hulk’s Edward Norton was originally planned to return as Bruce Banner / Hulk in The Avengers. But Norton typically likes to have a lot of input on his projects creatively. At that time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was developing a consistent style, and the studio leaders didn’t want anyone deviating from it.

The choice to part ways came from Marvel, not Edward Norton. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, explained in a statement that their decision wasn’t about money, but rather a desire for an actor who shared the creative and collaborative energy of the rest of the cast. However, Norton later stated that he didn’t want to reprise his role as Hulk, as he was looking for a wider range of acting opportunities.

9) Maria Bello Replaced Rachel Weisz in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Many viewers agree that The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor doesn’t capture the same enjoyable feeling as the original two movies. Even with its flaws, The Mummy Returns still managed to be charming, and it also brought back Rachel Weisz as Evie O’Connell.

Tomb of the Dragon Emperor didn’t feature Rachel Weisz, and there were several reasons why. Director Rob Cohen explained that Weisz didn’t want to play a mother to a 21-year-old son because she had just had a baby herself and didn’t feel she could convincingly portray someone with a grown child. Some people have disputed this claim, including Weisz herself. Another suggestion was that she wasn’t happy with the script, which seems plausible, but Weisz has never publicly confirmed this. Weisz also stated that she didn’t want to be away from her newborn son for five months.

8) Don Cheadle Replaced Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2

Similar to Norton, Terrence Howard only appeared in one Marvel Cinematic Universe film. For the first Iron Man movie, Howard earned between $3.5 and $4.5 million. Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. received just $500,000 initially, as he was seen as a risk at the time.

So, here’s the story with Terrence Howard and why he wasn’t in later Iron Man films. He had a three-picture deal, and initially, he was set to earn $8 million for Iron Man 2. But Marvel quickly realized that Robert Downey Jr. was the main attraction – the guy people were *really* coming to see. Even though Howard had a contract, they offered him only $1 million for the sequel, and that’s when they decided to go their separate ways. Then Don Cheadle stepped in, taking the role for $1 million, while Downey Jr. ended up making twenty times that amount compared to his first outing as Tony Stark. It’s a pretty stark contrast, if you ask me!

7) James Remar Replaced Christopher Lambert in Mortal Kombat Annihilation

As a big fan of the original Mortal Kombat movie, I always thought Christopher Lambert really *got* the role. It felt like his direction was simple: stand there, let his amazing long white hair flow, and throw in a knowing smirk now and then. You could just tell he was having a blast making the 1995 film – it really comes across on screen! He totally understood the assignment, honestly.

However, the part of Raiden was then given to James Remar (The Warriors, Dexter) for what was a quickly made and ultimately incomplete film, Mortal Kombat Annihilation. This makes sense, as Lambert had read the script.

6) Maggie Gyllenhaal Replaced Katie Holmes in The Dark Knight

Both Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal played Rachel Dawes very well in, respectively, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Originally, the role was only intended for Holmes, but things changed.

Essentially, Holmes chose not to appear in The Dark Knight, a film now widely regarded as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. It’s surprising to think most actors wouldn’t eagerly accept a role in a movie with such a strong script, but Holmes was determined to explore different opportunities. It makes you wonder if she ever second-guesses that decision now.

5) Jeffrey Weissman “Replaced” Crispin Glover in Back to the Future Part II

This situation is quite complex. Glover’s participation – or rather, his lack of participation – in Back to the Future Part II led to a major lawsuit that impacted the industry. However, director Robert Zemeckis and the film’s producers definitely tried to make audiences believe that Glover was once again portraying George McFly.

The resulting legal battle was a significant win for actors, preventing future films and shows from simply copying their appearance. While productions could cast someone who resembled the original actor, they were blocked from using heavy makeup to transform a new actor into a look-alike. So why didn’t Danny Glover appear in Back to the Future Part II? It wasn’t just about money; a salary disagreement was part of it, but Glover also disagreed with the film’s message that wealth equals happiness.

4) Brian Hull Replaced Adam Sandler in Hotel Transylvania: Transformania

If an actor appears in three consecutive films within a franchise, it’s generally assumed they’ll continue with the series. However, that wasn’t the situation for Adam Sandler and his character, “Drac,” in Hotel Transylvania: Transformania.

However, Brian Hull wasn’t the first to voice Drac. David Berni played the character in season one of Hotel Transylvania: The Series, and Ivan Sherry took on the role for season two. As for why Brian Hull voices Drac in the fourth film, there’s no official explanation. However, many believe it’s because Sandler had a deal with Netflix, while Transformania was exclusive to Prime Video.

3) Val Kilmer Replaced Michael Keaton in Batman Forever

Up to this point, nearly all the actors on this list have chosen to leave their respective franchises, rather than being fired. This is also true for Michael Keaton and his memorable portrayal of Batman.

Keaton was willing to keep playing the character only if Tim Burton stayed on the project. However, after Batman Returns frightened many children, Warner Bros. opted for a more family-friendly approach. That’s when Joel Schumacher came in with a much sillier script for Batman Forever. This was such a significant change in direction that Keaton didn’t want to continue with the role, so he wished them well and left. It’s always been a frustrating thought – what if we’d gotten a complete Burton trilogy? Would it have been as strong as the first two films, or would it have been a letdown?

2) Dan Castellaneta Replaced Robin Williams in The Return of Jafar

In addition to Glover, Howard, and Norton, the majority of these splits have been surprisingly friendly. However, Robin Williams’ departure from Disney following Aladdin wasn’t one of them.

Robin Williams enjoyed playing the Genie, but he immediately told Disney he didn’t want his voice or image used extensively in advertising-specifically, he didn’t want them to create toys based on his portrayal. Despite this, Disney prominently featured the Genie on promotional materials and used Williams’ voice in ways he’d asked them not to. As a result, Williams refused to participate in The Return of Jafar. Instead, The Simpsons’ Dan Castellaneta took over the role. However, he did agree to return for Aladdin and the King of Thieves after Disney’s new chairman, Joe Roth, publicly apologized.

1) John Shepherd Replaced Corey Feldman in Most of Friday the 13th: A New Beginning

Corey Feldman would have been happy to play Tommy Jarvis again in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. But, he was already committed to filming The Goonies when production began on the fifth Friday the 13th movie.

Despite being called Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, A New Beginning was made and released faster than any other film in the series-it came out just 11 months after Jason was believed to be dead. Once Corey Feldman finished working on The Final Chapter and started Goonies, he couldn’t be on set for the whole shoot of A New Beginning, but Paramount was eager to get it into theaters. Still, Feldman did manage to film a quick appearance in the opening flashback scene for A New Beginning, and it was actually shot in his own backyard.
