11 Years Ago, This Historical Mystery Series Redefined Seinen

Natsu Hyūga’s popular light novel, The Apothecary Diaries, first appeared on August 29th, 2014, and has since changed what people expect from stories aimed at the Seinen audience. Inspired by China’s Tang Dynasty, the author presents the story in a unique and captivating way, immediately drawing readers in. The series expanded with a manga release in 2017, and then an anime adaptation in 2023, both of which boosted its popularity. Over time, The Apothecary Diaries has become more than just a typical historical Seinen story, centering on Maomao, a remarkably intelligent apothecary who is highly knowledgeable about medicine and poisons, and has a talent for cracking mysteries.

Once kidnapped and forced into service at the Rear Palace, she finds herself involved with Jinshi, a powerful eunuch who oversees the concubines’ living quarters. She attempts to keep her talents hidden, but eventually attracts Jinshi’s attention. Using her intelligence, Maomao assists him in unraveling various mysteries, while also doing everything she can to help the concubines. The story currently spans 16 volumes, and continues to captivate readers after all these years, leaving fans eager to discover what unfolds next.

The Apothecary Diaries Is a Breath of Fresh Air Among Historical Shows

The Seinen demographic generally enjoys action-packed or intense psychological series, making The Apothecary Diaries unique with its focus on solving medical puzzles in a historical context. The show keeps viewers engaged by frequently switching between normal daily life, cheerful moments, thrilling investigations, and heartbreaking events. Although the story takes place within the Royal Palace, it doesn’t revolve around the Emperor; instead, it focuses on the lives of common people like government workers, imperial concubines, maids, and courtesans.

The historical setting isn’t just a background element; it’s essential to the story. The characters and events are shaped by this specific era, meaning the palace intrigue and mysteries couldn’t happen anywhere else. The strict social rules of the court, the fight for power, and even the poisonings all contribute to a sense of realism and tie the story firmly to its time. Maomao is central to everything, as she’s connected to all the other characters and serves as the heart of the show.

Growing up in a luxurious brothel, she was later adopted by Luomen, a remarkably skilled apothecary. When Jinshi learned about her past, he let her reconnect with her origins, giving her more independence. She doesn’t seek recognition for her efforts, and isn’t boastful; she just focuses on doing what she feels is correct. Having been raised with simple means, Maomao throws herself into her work, even as she tries to ignore her developing feelings for Jinshi. She dedicates all her energy to her tasks while suppressing her growing affection.

The Apothecary Diaries’ Charm Lies in Its Female Cast

Even in its brief two seasons, the anime features a remarkable cast of female characters who truly resonate with the audience. It’s common for anime and manga-no matter the genre-to showcase many compelling male characters, but often relegate the women to supporting roles. However, The Apothecary Diaries uniquely centers its story around the women of the palace and the Verdigris House, regardless of how prominent their parts may be. Maomao frequently points out the parallels between the Rear Palace and the Verdigris House, and this comparison is a key element in driving the show’s plot.

Empress Dowager Anshi, even though she married the former Emperor when she was young, is fiercely determined to put an end to his ongoing abuse of young girls. Loulan, who was essentially sold by her family to become a concubine, bravely steps up to oppose the rebellion and protect the children of the Clan. The story features many characters like these – they may not have leading roles, but they leave a lasting impression on readers.

The real heart of this story is how it delicately depicts these women. Even though their society limits them, they still manage to stand up for themselves, care for their families, and surprisingly change things. It’s particularly remarkable considering they live in a society dominated by men, yet they persistently fight for what they believe in and for their own well-being.
