Between his first and second Avatar films – released in 2009 and 2022 – the Academy Award-winning director worked on other projects. One such project was 2019’s .
Although James Cameron didn’t direct the movie – Robert Rodriguez was the director – the Titanic director helped write the screenplay with Laeta Kalogridis and also co-produced it alongside Jon Landau. The science fiction film didn’t get great reviews, but it did reasonably well, which led to talk about making a sequel. Now, six years later, there haven’t been many clear announcements. However, the person who oversaw the creation of Alita shared hopeful news about Alita: Battle Angel 2 during an interview with .
I often mention Alita,” Salazar confessed while discussing the science fiction movie. She hinted, “It could still [come to fruition].” Salazar explained that the possibility of a sequel hasn’t been ruled out, and she’s optimistic about Cameron’s continued dedication to the project. “He has the sets ready. We’ll get [James] Cameron as soon as he finishes the next Avatar…”
She playfully explained, “I constantly encourage people – I’m always saying, ‘Keep going, keep going!'” She added that she’s like all the bots you see online that repeat encouraging messages.
Salazar spoke highly of both the film and the people who created it. “It’s truly exceptional – the best, really. The fact that James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez, who are friends, collaborated on this project is clear. You can feel all the passion. They had a fantastic script, and an incredible visual effects team like Wētā… Thousands of people contributed to this, and it all culminates in this moment between two… It’s just remarkable. I really appreciate a team effort, and to see it done on such a large scale?”
During the talk, the actress shared that she felt “nervous” about leading a huge blockbuster film, especially since she’d previously had supporting parts in popular franchises like The Maze Runner or Divergent. But she decided to take on the role of Alita. She explained, “From the moment I first read the script, I knew I could do it. I felt confident I could deliver a great performance.“
She continued, “I think it was just that last final audition with Robert, where I had the time and the space and the attention to really say, like, ‘This is who I think she is.’ And I think he said, ‘Okay. She has a clear vision of who this person is, and it jives with mine.’ So from that moment on, it was smooth sailing.”
Rosa Salazar shared that she was so passionate about the character that she actually wrote a story outline for a potential sequel. “I wrote this treatment for Alita 2 immediately after the first film came out, and I sent it to James Cameron. He thought it was great! He’s James Cameron, of course, so it might not be the story we end up filming, but I’m such a big fan of the original books that I couldn’t resist trying to contribute.”
Robert Rodriguez Wants to Do Alita: Battle Angel 2
Rosa Salazar isn’t the only one excited about a follow-up film. The director expressed similar enthusiasm earlier this year, saying, “Yeah, we definitely want to make another one.” He also mentioned that portions of the movie set are still stored at his studio. “The entire city is still in my parking lot-20-foot ceilings, seven streets. It’s possibly the biggest standing set in the country, maybe even the world.”
The film Alita: Battle Angel, which is based on the manga series by Yukito Kishiro, received mixed reactions from critics. Currently, it has a slightly positive rating of 61% based on over 300 reviews, but audiences loved it, giving it a score of 91%. Produced with an estimated budget of $150 to $200 million, the movie grossed $401.9 million. Considering the budget, the film was a moderate success, even though critics didn’t favor it.
Alita: Battle Angel is streaming on Hulu.
