Over the decades, Batman and his allies – collectively known as the Bat Family – have sported countless different costumes. Since Batman first appeared in 1939, followed by Robin a year later, the duo – and the expanding Bat Family – have undergone numerous changes in appearance. Considering two major timeline revisions, five different Robins, and three Batgirls, it’s no surprise! Here’s a look at some of the most memorable outfits from Gotham’s crimefighters.
15) Zur-En-Arrh
The Zur-En-Arrh costume isn’t Bruce Wayne’s strangest outfit, but it definitely made an impact. It’s worn when Bruce’s backup personality takes control, and it was originally based on an older, somewhat silly comic book idea. However, over time, it’s become surprisingly stylish and well-regarded.
Opinions on the Zur-En-Arrh costume are mixed these days, but Jorge Jiménez’s artwork made it look fantastic. Even though we probably won’t see it again anytime soon, the bold colors and the baseball bat were enough to truly terrify Gotham’s criminals.
14) Batman Beyond, Terry McGinnis
The Beyond suit is instantly recognizable as Terry McGinnis’s signature look. Its streamlined, all-black design with the striking red cape is a fantastic futuristic superhero costume. It’s packed with features too – including rocket boots, a gliding cape that even the original Batman would envy, and the ability to turn invisible. It really has everything a hero could need!
13) Absolute Batman
In a unique take on the classic hero, *Absolute Batman* is arguably the most innovative version of Batman we’ve seen in years. This Batman’s suit is a major departure from the norm, featuring less of a flowing cape and more protective armor. It’s also packed with weapons, including concealed spikes, bat-shaped throwing knives hidden in the ears, and a bat emblem that transforms into an axe.
Though it’s primarily a revamped design rather than a completely new suit, it’s worth noting. The book’s popularity is largely due to this Batman’s intense personality and his distinctive suit.
12) Robin, Tim Drake
Tim Drake’s first Robin suit is considered the definitive version of the classic look. It was a significant improvement, featuring a more durable cape with a black outside and yellow lining, full gauntlets, and, for the first time, proper pants instead of just boots and gloves. This new design created a Robin who looked truly prepared for battle, proving how to modernize the character while also increasing his protection.
11) Batwoman, Kate Kane
Kate Kane’s costume shares a similar style to the one Terry McGinnis wears in *Beyond*, and it’s considered one of the best in the Bat-Family. The most clever part is the fake red wig built into her cowl. Even though Kate naturally has red hair, the wig is a brilliant disguise. Her suit is simple, streamlined, and immediately recognizable – a surprisingly valuable trait for a superhero costume, even without a lot of added features.
10) The Signal, Duke Thomas
Duke Thomas’s Signal costume is easily the most unique of the group, and it’s meant to be. As Gotham’s daytime hero, Duke wears a bright yellow suit that makes him stand out in a fight. This color choice is intentional – it’s designed to disorient and distract criminals. The suit also works well with Duke’s ability to control shadows.
9) Spoiler, Stephanie Brown
Stephanie Brown is known by many names – Robin, Batgirl, and most notably, Spoiler. As Spoiler, this Gotham vigilante typically wears dark clothing to stay hidden in the shadows. Despite her cheerful personality, her costume is simple but effective. Fans often argue about which mask style suited her better – the full black mask or the half mask – but both looked great.
8) The Original Red Hood, Jason Todd
As a big Batman fan, I always thought the original Red Hood look – the one Jason Todd wore *before* he was officially part of the Bat-Family – was his best. It’s funny, because so many of his later costumes seem to try and recapture that same feeling, but none of them quite hit the mark. That’s how you know it was a really strong design! He’s kept a similar style with the jacket throughout the years, but that classic black leather look? That was always the best one, hands down.
7) Burnside’s Barbara Gordon
Although Barbara Gordon originated the name Batgirl, many fans consider her Burnside costume to be her best. While her original suit was excellent, the Burnside design truly brought her character to life. The fresh colors and a deliberately ‘homemade’ look added a lot of personality, ultimately making it the most iconic Batgirl costume associated with Barbara Gordon.
6) Batgirl, Cassandra Cain
Okay, let’s talk Batgirl costumes. We’ve seen a few good ones, but Cassandra Cain’s really stands out to me. It’s a full-body suit, which is perfect for her stealthy, silent approach – it genuinely makes her feel like a trained assassin. But what’s interesting is that, despite looking the part, Cain actually prioritizes protecting life. She *gets* what Batman stands for, and her costume subtly shows that. She didn’t want something flashy or unique to *herself*; she intentionally designed it to echo Batman’s look, showing respect for his legacy and approach. It’s a really smart design choice that speaks volumes about her character.
5) Cowled Red Robin
Although his time as Red Robin didn’t last long, Tim Drake felt more like himself in that role and experienced significant personal growth. The Red Robin costume symbolized a complete evolution of his character, blending his past as Robin with a new identity. While some fans prefer his earlier look with the wingsuit, the Red Robin persona ultimately felt like a better fit for Tim’s personality.
Embracing a dramatic, expressive style is really allowing Tim to be more authentic. If he could bring back any of his old looks, this one would be his first choice. You can tell it’s a fantastic costume because it’s directly inspired by the artwork of Alex Ross.
4) Infinite Frontier Robin
Finally, let’s talk about the best Robin costume. Damian Wayne’s choice to combine his father’s history with his League of Assassins training was brilliant. The hooded cape with orange accents was a daring new look for Robin and foreshadowed his future batsuit in *Batman #666*. Even though this costume didn’t last long, it proves that a grey suit is the ideal direction for Robin’s design.
3) Redondo Nightwing
Nightwing has the best costume of all of Batman’s former sidekicks, and the peak of those designs came from the comic run by Bruno Redondo and Tom Taylor. It’s a cleverly updated look that uses classic comic book shading and striking blue accents. This costume, along with a return to Nightwing’s core character, was a brilliant move.
2) Black and Grey Batman
Many fans consider the traditional black and grey Batsuit to be one of Batman’s greatest looks. It made a strong comeback in the late 1990s and remains a defining costume for a lot of people. When most DC fans imagine Batman, this is the suit they picture, making it incredibly iconic. It looks fantastic in the darkness and truly embodies the idea of ‘The Dark Knight’.
1) Blue and Grey Batman
It’s possible we’re still excited by what’s new, but Batman’s classic blue and grey suit is a welcome sight. While the darker suit represents his brooding side, this brighter look feels like a return to a more hopeful era of Batman comics. We’re thrilled to see it back in the new *Batman* series by Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez, and can’t wait to see more of it.
