As a total film buff, I always feel like October is *the* month for movies. Everyone gets into the spooky spirit, and I always start by rewatching a classic horror film – it just feels right! But once that’s done, the whole month is still open for possibilities. Of course, I’ll probably watch a bunch more scary movies or a terrifying series, but October is a great time to dig around on streaming services like Netflix and find some hidden gems I might have missed. Since we’re already in movie mode, why not explore a little?
Netflix is well-known for its original series like *Stranger Things* and *Wednesday*. But beyond those popular hits, there’s a lot more to discover. Here are ten lesser-known movies worth checking out on Netflix this October.
10) The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Henry Cavill has had a bit more free time lately because he’s been focusing on developing his own projects. If you’re a fan of his work, you can revisit The Man From U.N.C.L.E, which is soon leaving Netflix. The film features Cavill as Napoleon Solo alongside Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin, working together to stop a dangerous nuclear plot. While the story isn’t perfect, the actors deliver excellent performances, making it an enjoyable watch.
9) Plane
Gerard Butler is known for starring in big, action-packed films like *Olympus Has Fallen*. While his new movie, *Plane*, might seem like just another typical action film, it’s surprisingly more than that. It’s a moving story about two very different people who must learn to cooperate when facing impossible challenges. Butler delivers a strong performance, and Mike Colter, known for his role in *Luke Cage*, also shines.
8) The Other Guys
If you’re asked to name a movie with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, Daddy’s Home likely springs to mind – it’s a popular and funny family film with a sequel. But their truly best movie together is The Other Guys, where they play a pair of hilariously inept police officers. This film’s unique brand of humor is unforgettable, and it’s so good you’ll definitely want to see a sequel!
7) Always Be My Maybe
While romantic comedies often feel perfect for February, *Always Be My Maybe* is enjoyable any time of year because it’s more than just a love story. The connection between Ali Wong and Randall Park feels real, particularly when they playfully bounce ideas off each other. Plus, the movie features a fantastic cameo from Keanu Reeves, who gets to show off his comedic side.
6) 8 Mile
Many young people today aren’t familiar with the intense underground rap scene that existed in Detroit (area code 313). The movie *8 Mile*, starring Eminem, offers a dramatized look at the beginning of his career. It could have easily been a cheesy story about a struggling rapper, but instead, it’s a powerful and moving film about overcoming challenges. And surprisingly, despite not being a trained actor, Eminem gives an incredible performance, even managing to ‘battle’ and out-rap the actor who later played Captain America.
5) Pig
If you’re looking for some good movies to watch in October, you can’t go wrong with Nicolas Cage! Everyone knows about *Ghost Rider* and *The Wicker Man*, which are both pretty scary. But I recently saw *Pig*, and it’s amazing! It’s about a truffle hunter, Rob, who just wants to live a quiet life, but gets pulled into a really intense situation when someone robs him. Honestly, it’s one of Cage’s best performances – and that’s saying a lot! Plus, the story itself is fantastic.
4) Train to Busan
No list of great movies would be complete without some horror, so let’s start with *Train to Busan*, a truly memorable zombie film. What makes it special is that you actually get to know and care about the characters, making the suspense even more intense. Like *World War Z*, *Train to Busan* features zombies that are incredibly fast and relentlessly aggressive.
3) The Babysitter
McG is a major force in the horror genre, even if he doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves. He was an executive producer on the popular TV show *Supernatural* and then shifted his focus to horror films. *The Babysitter* is a particularly well-received movie, and it’s easy to see why. While it uses familiar slasher tropes, it also adds humor and memorable characters. If you enjoy *The Babysitter*, its sequel is also available on Netflix.
2) Creep
The found footage horror genre has slowed down a bit, likely because there have been so many films of that type. However, *Creep*, directed by Patrick Brice and starring Mark Duplass, is a welcome addition. The film centers on a videographer who takes a job documenting a terminally ill man hoping to leave a legacy for his unborn child, and things quickly become strange as the cameraman realizes he shouldn’t have taken the job from a stranger.
1) 47 Meters Down
As a total movie buff, I have to say that with *Jaws* now streaming on Netflix, it’s tough to get excited about other shark films. But *47 Meters Down* really surprised me! It’s genuinely tense, beautifully shot, and smartly avoids trying to be something it’s not. It keeps things focused on the characters and their desperate struggle to survive, which is exactly what makes it work.
