While many action films have been released recently, few have achieved the same level of success as the 2022 blockbuster, *Top Gun: Maverick*. The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 film skillfully blended classic elements with modern filmmaking, becoming Tom Cruise’s highest-earning movie to date. Many fans consider it one of the greatest films ever, and it remains incredibly popular on Paramount+ even nearly three years after its initial release.
Released in theaters on May 27, 2022, *Top Gun: Maverick* became a huge box office success, earning over $1.4 billion worldwide. It was the second highest-grossing film of the year, only behind James Cameron’s *Avatar: The Way of Water*. Before *Top Gun: Maverick*, Tom Cruise’s biggest hit was *Mission: Impossible – Fallout*, but the new *Top Gun* movie quickly surpassed it in earnings.
Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, a celebrated Navy pilot with over three decades of experience, continues to thrive as a daring test pilot, deliberately avoiding promotions that would force him to stop flying. When he’s tasked with training a new group of Top Gun graduates, he comes face-to-face with Lt. Bradley Bradshaw, the son of his late friend and fellow pilot, Goose. As Maverick grapples with his past and an uncertain future, he’s forced to confront his deepest fears while preparing for a dangerous mission that will require everything from those chosen to undertake it.
What’s the Status of ‘Top Gun3’?
Paramount Pictures
Most fans loved *Top Gun: Maverick*, giving it a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. But they weren’t alone in thinking it was a great sequel. Critics also praised the film, with a 96% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating, and many agreed that Tom Cruise delivered a standout performance. As critic Shakyl Lambert explained:
Top Gun: Maverick isn’t just a good sequel – it’s better than the first movie. It stands out with incredible action sequences and characters that develop in compelling ways.
Given the massive success of *Top Gun: Maverick*, it’s clear Paramount is eager to make another film. While official details are limited, a sequel is currently being developed. Writer and producer Christopher McQuarrie recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he’s figured out the story for *Top Gun 3*, saying it wasn’t difficult to come up with.
I had an initial idea, and the process started with us brainstorming. Ehren Kruger suggested an approach, and I thought it had potential. We discussed it briefly, and a basic structure quickly emerged.
While fans wait to hear about the next Top Gun movie, Top Gun: Maverick is currently available to watch on Paramount+.
