A strong villain is crucial for a successful superhero film. Marvel spent years developing Thanos across multiple movies before he finally appeared as the main threat in *Avengers: Infinity War*. This careful build-up worked perfectly, creating a villain who was both frightening and understandable. But the movie could have easily failed if the character hadn’t been handled well. Similarly, DC benefited greatly from Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal of the Joker, which transformed Christopher Nolan’s *Dark Knight* trilogy into a masterpiece. Sadly, DC hasn’t been able to recreate that success since.
Following the success of *The Dark Knight*, several major DC villains have appeared in films, either as part of the DC Extended Universe or in standalone movies. While some of these performances were strong, others were disappointing, especially considering the actors’ potential. Here are three instances where excellent casting choices were let down by poorly written villains.
3) Mark Strong as Sinestro
Okay, so 2011’s *Green Lantern* really seemed to be setting up a whole universe of movies, introducing the Green Lantern Corps and Hal Jordan as the new guy. Ryan Reynolds got a quick training montage on Oa, but honestly, the movie spent way too much time with these really weak villains – Hector Hammond and this big scary thing called Parallax. From the start, those guys just felt like your typical, forgettable comic book baddies. It’s a shame, because not *every* character was a dud, thankfully.
Mark Strong delivers a strong performance as Sinestro, mentoring Hal Jordan while grappling with a loss of faith in the Guardians of the Universe. However, the film doesn’t give Sinestro enough screen time, and potential storylines for his future are left unresolved due to the lack of a follow-up movie. Fortunately, Strong later had a chance to shine as Doctor Sivana within the DC Extended Universe.
2) Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor
As a big movie fan, I always appreciate smart casting, and *Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* definitely seems to follow the lead of Christopher Nolan’s approach. Zack Snyder made a really interesting choice bringing in Ben Affleck – an Academy Award winner, no less – to play a darker, more brooding Batman. But the biggest gamble, for me, was Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. He’s not exactly known for playing villains, and his take on Luthor felt more like a fast-talking, chaotic Riddler than the classic, calculating mastermind we’re used to in the DC universe.
Jesse Eisenberg is a truly talented actor, as demonstrated by his work in films like *The Social Network* and *A Real Pain*. He’s clearly capable of competing with the best in Hollywood. However, he doesn’t quite work as Lex Luthor. It’s difficult to imagine anyone succeeding in that role given the weak script and direction.
1) Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord
The original *Wonder Woman* movie struggled with its villains. Even with talented actors like Danny Huston and David Thewlis cast in those roles, the film didn’t give them compelling stories or believable reasons for their actions. The sequel, *Wonder Woman 1984*, repeated this mistake with the villain, Maxwell Lord.
Pedro Pascal, currently one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors, plays the villain, Lord. He wants to reshape the world using a powerful artifact called the Dreamstone, but Wonder Woman, Diana Prince, is determined to stop him. Unfortunately, their confrontation is a bit underwhelming. Lord mostly stays put, directing events from a single location instead of actively engaging in the fight.
