Fans are worried about the future of Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series, *Wonder Man*, after a new report surfaced. An industry source suggests the show might be released under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner, which has led to fears that it could be limited to just one season.
Wonder Man could be labeled under Marvel Spotlight banner
Marvel’s upcoming Wonder Man series might be released as a standalone project, separate from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Industry source Daniel Richtman reports it could fall under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ label, which is used for stories less connected to the wider MCU. (via Comic Book Movie)
This new approach for Wonder Man is worrying for the show’s future and its place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It feels disconnected from the larger MCU and makes a second season seem less likely. Earlier reports suggested the show won’t have any big cameos, which has already disappointed fans who were hoping for more connections to established Marvel characters.
Wonder Man centers around Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who unexpectedly gains superpowers. Details about what’s next for his character are currently being kept secret.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Wonder Man (Simon Williams) in the upcoming series, and Ben Kingsley is returning as Trevor Slattery. Demetrius Grosse and Ed Harris are also part of the cast. While Bob Odenkirk and Courteney Cox are reportedly being considered for roles, their participation hasn’t been officially confirmed.
Andrew Guest is the head writer for the project, and Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the first two episodes while also serving as an executive producer. Brad Winderbaum of Marvel Studios calls the show “very sincere and beautiful,” and even says it’s one of his favorite projects, believing it’s the best show people haven’t seen yet. He’s eager to see how audiences will respond (according to Collider).
Wonder Man is expected to premiere on Disney+ this December.
