Eight years since its debut, “The Last Jedi” – directed by Rian Johnson – continues to spark intense debate within the Star Wars community. This installment of the Sequel Trilogy and the Skywalker Saga as a whole has been particularly contentious, with viewers engaged in discussions about its narrative, character portrayals of iconic figures, and overall impact on the trilogy. Interestingly, “The Last Jedi” boasts the highest critical acclaim among the Sequel Trilogy, fueling further debate around “Episode VIII”.
Over time, Hamill has openly expressed his views on “The Last Jedi,” often criticizing the portrayal of his character, especially regarding Luke’s decision to go into exile after Ben Solo’s betrayal. In a recent interview, the actor shared that he developed an alternative backstory for Luke’s self-imposed exile, which is much more ominous than anything “Star Wars” has presented in years.
Mark Hamill Has a Dark Theory About Luke Skywalker’s Exile in The Last Jedi
Disney Would Never Have Approved This Dark Backstory
In contrast to what we see on screen in “The Last Jedi,” Mark Hamill has different thoughts about why Luke Skywalker chose isolation. By the time viewers encounter Luke again at the end of “The Force Awakens,” he had been living secluded on the remote planet Ahch-To for several years, disconnected from the Force. The events leading up to this in “Episode VIII” reveal that Luke went into exile following his nephew Ben Solo’s betrayal of the new Jedi Order, murdering the other students and embracing the Dark Side. This twist was divisive among fans, with Hamill himself disagreeing with it. Hamill suggests that rather than being defeated by these events, Luke would instead become more determined to rebuild the Jedi Order. With Rian Johnson’s approval, Hamill created his own, much darker narrative to explain Luke’s decision to retreat.
In my perspective, Hamill’s backstory significantly influenced his acting in “The Last Jedi,” though it doesn’t align with Johnson’s script or the broader Star Wars lore as canon. Yet, this discrepancy offers a compelling alternative perspective on his self-imposed exile. It’s essential to clarify that Hamill has consistently denied any disputes with Johnson, despite persistent rumors within the Star Wars community for years. However, the intriguing aspect of Hamill’s narrative isn’t its contrast with “The Last Jedi,” but rather, how deeply dark it portrays his character.
Hamill’s Backstory Is Way Too Dark for Star Wars (But Makes More Sense)
Luke Needed a Bigger Reason to Go Into Exile
The background story presented here is very grim and might be too distressing for a Star Wars film. Since the brutal killing of the Jedi younglings in Revenge of the Sith, nothing this grim has been shown in Star Wars. However, despite its darkness, this backstory serves its purpose: it’s something so painful that Luke can overcome it. The main issue with Luke’s story in The Last Jedi was not so much what caused him to give up, but rather that fans expected someone as resilient as Luke to continue despite his setbacks. To defeat the eternal light within Luke, something equally dark would have to challenge him. Just like his father before him, the love for his wife and children could turn Luke away from the Jedi.
Fans of what was once called the Star Wars Expanded Universe, now known as Legends, should be thrilled by Hamill’s comments. In these no longer canonical stories, Luke Skywalker had a spouse named Mara Jade, who was formerly the Emperor’s Hand but later switched to the Light Side. Mara and Luke also had a son, Ben Skywalker, who pursued his father’s path as a Jedi. Sadly, these characters were eliminated from canon when Disney acquired Star Wars. Hamill’s backstory could potentially reintroduce them into canon, although they might have been written out earlier than in the Expanded Universe. However, there’s always a possibility that Mara Jade and Ben Skywalker, or perhaps characters similar to them, may show up in future Star Wars stories, possibly incorporating some of Hamill’s dark concepts to clarify Luke’s reasons for going into exile.
