Michael J. Fox Breaks Down Why the Shrinking Set Was Different

Michael J. Fox, a five-time Emmy winner, is famous for starring in two successful TV shows and the iconic *Back to the Future* movies. Now, he’s joining the popular Apple TV+ series, created with Bill Lawrence, who also worked with Fox on his hit show *Spin City*.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Michael J. Fox will appear in a significant role on the show *Shrinking*. The series follows Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel), a therapist dealing with the loss of his wife, and the people around him. *Shrinking* has been renewed for a third season, and Fox will play a character who, like the actor himself, lives with Parkinson’s disease. In a recent interview with People magazine, Fox discussed his experience working on the show and how it compared to his other acting jobs.

Although details about his character in *Shrinking* are limited, Michael J. Fox described what it was like to act while living with Parkinson’s disease. He explained that for the first time, he could focus solely on his performance without worrying about how he felt physically. He simply went to work and did it. Fox also expressed his hope to continue acting, believing he can still find roles that suit his skills as an actor and writer. He feels he also has much to offer as a father, husband, and friend.

Shrinking Co-Creator Teases Fox’s Season 3 Role

Michael J. Fox’s most recent TV appearance was as Louis Canning in *The Good Fight* in 2020, and he previously did voice work on the Canadian animated series *Corner Gas Animated* in 2019. In *Shrinking*, he’s expected to share a lot of scenes with Harrison Ford, who plays a therapist, Dr. Paul Rhoades, and also lives with Parkinson’s disease.

Because the show focuses on Parkinson’s disease and features a character who regularly visits a neurologist, it felt natural to cast Mike in a role where he played someone with the condition. Lawrence explained that while the character’s experience with Parkinson’s is very different from Mike’s own personality and reactions, Mike is uniquely able to portray the character’s emotional truth authentically.

I was so moved by what Harrison Ford said about Michael J. Fox on a recent interview! He really highlighted what an incredible person Michael is, emphasizing his bravery, strength, and especially his grace. Ford described him as a really smart, generous, and passionate guy, and someone we can all look up to, no matter what challenges we’re facing. It’s just amazing to see someone handle things with such dignity.

He not only gave me resources to understand the disease, but also helped me feel confident that Paul believed he could rise to the occasion. Ford emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “We can’t take this lightly or make it a joke.” Parkinson’s is a serious condition, and he’s committed to portraying it accurately and respectfully. It’s crucial to approach the challenges Parkinson’s presents with sensitivity and avoid exploiting it for entertainment.

The show *Shrinking* has been well-received, earning a 94% approval rating from critics and an 89% rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The first two seasons are currently available to stream on Apple TV+, and while a release date for Season 3 hasn’t been announced yet, fans are eagerly awaiting its arrival.
