James Gunn explains exactly how powerful David Corenswet’s will be on the big screen.
When asked by if Corenswet’s Man of Steel would be more emotionally vulnerable compared to previous versions of Superman, Gunn affirmed that this vulnerability was indeed intentional. He clarified, “Emotionally, certainly, because we delve into Superman’s personal life in this iteration. This is about his inner struggles… As for physical vulnerability, well, he’s still battling an equal and opposite force, just like in Superman II directed by Donner.
However, unlike the depiction in the 1978 film Superman where Christopher Reeve’s character could reverse Earth’s rotation and even flow of time by spinning around it, our portrayal showcases him bleeding when injured, which sets him apart. Moreover, I combined various iterations of Superman from the comics to craft his power set in a unique way.
In the upcoming “Superman” movie featuring David Corenswet, Gunn serves as both writer and director, presenting a fresh take on the Man of Steel within the expanding DC Universe. The talented cast includes Skyler Gisondo portraying Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. The narrative of “Superman” primarily focuses on the titular character grappling with his dual Kryptonian background and life on Earth.
Why David Corenswet’s Superman Isn’t Everyone’s Favorite Superhero

Although Superman views Mister Terrific as his best friend, the truth is far from that. In fact, Mister Terrific considers Superman rather uncool. Regardless, they are united in their fight against crime and share the title of heroes. However, beyond their shared roles, they don’t have much in common.
Introducing Michael Gathegi’s character, Mister Terrific, marks a significant sign of how expansive the DC Universe is expected to grow, surpassing even Superman himself. In the upcoming movie, Superman, Gathegi’s Mister Terrific will join other new heroes making their mark, such as Fillion’s Green Lantern, Merced’s Hawkgirl, and Carrigan’s Metamorpho. All these characters are poised to make a substantial impact when the film hits theaters next week.
Superman is set to fly into theaters on July 11.
