Disney has been turning its classic animated films into live-action movies for several years, with mixed results – the recent *Snow White* remake is a good example. Now, it seems a live-action version of *Tangled* is being planned, and Scarlett Johansson is rumored to be in talks to play the villain, Mother Gothel. Many of these live-action adaptations are available to stream with a Disney+ subscription.
Disney’s 2010 animated film, *Tangled*, was a critical and commercial success that many feel deserves more recognition. Recent news from Deadline confirms that a live-action remake is back in development. Michael Gracey will continue to direct, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has written the screenplay. The biggest surprise is reports that Scarlett Johansson is being considered to play the villain, Mother Gothel.
I was surprised by this casting choice – she wasn’t who I initially pictured for the part. However, Scarlett Johansson has maintained a positive relationship with Disney, even after her legal dispute over *Black Widow*. There doesn’t seem to be any lingering animosity, and she’s known for her vocal work, having voiced Kaa in the 2016 film *The Jungle Book*, including singing the memorable song “Trust in Me.” She also showcased her singing talent in her highly praised role in *Her*.

Scarlett Johansson would be fantastic as Mother Gothel, but fans online have suggested other great actresses too. Kathryn Hahn is a particularly popular choice, as she’s already proven she can play a memorable, musical villain with her role as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Helen Bonham Carter and Michelle Gomez, known for her work in *Doctor Who*, are also being mentioned as potential fits.
It’s still unconfirmed whether Scarlett Johansson will star in the live-action *Tangled* movie, but it would be a great pick. She recently became the highest-grossing actor of all time and has continued working with Disney after finishing her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s currently developing a *Tower of Terror* film with them too, so bringing her popularity and talent to the role of Mother Gothel makes a lot of sense.
Donna Murphy, the star of *The Gilded Actress* and a Broadway legend, originally voiced Mother Gothel in *Tangled*, meaning the next actor to take on the role has a lot to live up to. “Mother Knows Best” is a fantastic song, and the complex, manipulative relationship between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel is central to the story. Seeing this dynamic brought to life in a live-action adaptation should be really interesting.
Everyone’s been wondering who would play Rapunzel in *Tangled*. Mandy Moore ultimately landed the role, bringing a lot of energy to the character’s lines and using her beautiful singing voice. The actor playing Flynn Rider will also need to have a really captivating and intense gaze!
