Superhero teams are a key part of what makes Marvel and DC comics so enduring. With such large and complex universes, teams allow both companies to feature many characters at once. They’re a great way to highlight popular heroes while also giving lesser-known characters a chance to shine, and to explore interesting new relationships between them. This makes the fictional worlds feel more real, showing heroes working together to achieve common goals. Iconic teams like the Justice League, the Avengers, and the Teen Titans have become central to their respective publishers and define what those universes are all about.
It’s easy to focus on the popular superhero teams, but many others are overlooked and forgotten. For every team that achieves lasting fame, several more disappear without a trace, which is a real loss considering their potential. Today, we’re highlighting five of these deserving but forgotten teams and hoping they’ll get another opportunity to prove themselves.
5) The Guild of Detection
This team is new to us, and we’re eager to see them in action. They debuted in *Detective Comics* #1000 when Batman joined their ranks, and they’re a secret society comprised of the world’s best detectives. Membership is incredibly difficult to achieve, requiring candidates to solve almost unsolvable clues set by existing members. The team boasts impressive detectives like the Question, Detective Chimp, and the classic Slam Bradley. They maintain detailed files on the most significant and bizarre unsolved cases, making them ideal for a series of stories where different detectives team up to tackle strange and supernatural mysteries.
Given that the company is named after *Detective Comics*, creating a compelling mystery series starring their top detectives feels like a natural fit. Imagine brilliant investigators, even better than Sherlock Holmes, collaborating on strange and seemingly impossible cases – it would unlock endless storytelling potential and allow DC to explore both the dark and bizarre corners of its universe.
4) A-Force
A-Force is a team of only female superheroes dedicated to protecting Arcadia, a part of Doctor Doom’s realm of Battleworld. Led by She-Hulk, the team brought together many of Marvel’s most prominent female heroes, including Captain Marvel, Jean Grey, and Medusa. All-female teams are rare in comics, and A-Force proved this is a concept worth revisiting.
Having She-Hulk lead a team of major Marvel heroines would be really exciting, especially with strong personalities like Rogue and Spider-Woman interacting. There are already many male-led teams, so it’s time for a team where the women take the lead.
3) The Legion of Substitute Heroes
The Legion of Super-Heroes are a team of heroes from the 31st century, motivated by Superman’s example to safeguard the universe. The Legion of Substitute Heroes, however, is made up of those who didn’t make the cut for the original Legion, often because their powers are either weak or dangerously strange. Some members include Color Kid, who can change the color of objects, Double-Header, a man with two constantly bickering heads, and Infectious Lass, who carries a vast number of diseases.
They’re a complete disaster, as Brainiac 5 described it. They don’t just rush into danger – they manage to make things even harder for themselves! But that’s what makes them so fun to watch. It’s incredibly funny seeing heroes with limited abilities try to save the day. And when they *do* succeed, despite everything, it’s genuinely inspiring to see their perseverance. They’re the ultimate underdog team, and we always need more stories about people overcoming the odds.
2) The Midnight Sons
The Midnight Sons are a popular Marvel team known for battling supernatural threats. The group is made up of heroes who often deal with the darker side of magic and the occult, with key members like Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, and Blade. Each hero usually has a troubled past or a complicated connection to the supernatural world.
This team, dedicated to the occult, fights some of Marvel’s most terrifying monsters, making them perfect for spooky and intriguing stories about the magical side of the universe. While magic isn’t new to Marvel, it’s always welcome, and the Midnight Sons are a powerful and well-established group that truly delivers. They also have a fantastic look and a memorable name.
1) Justice League Task Force
The Justice League Task Force was a good concept, but it never really found its purpose in time. Initially led by Martian Manhunter with a changing roster, it eventually became a training ground for heroes who weren’t quite ready for the main Justice League team.
Imagine Martian Manhunter taking on the challenge of turning DC’s less powerful, rookie heroes into true members of the Justice League. This setup is ripe with potential for compelling underdog stories. It’s a great opportunity to showcase DC’s often-overlooked characters, exploring their dynamics as a flawed, yet relatable, team. The series could even introduce fresh faces and let readers witness their journey from obscurity to standing alongside icons like Superman and Wonder Woman. Plus, it’s a chance to revisit older, less popular characters and see how they’re pushed to their limits by Martian Manhunter – creating moments that are both hilarious and heartfelt. What more could you ask for in a story like this?
