Sigourney Weaver Has Discussed a Possible Alien Return (but Should It Happen?)

As a lifelong sci-fi fan, I’ve been thrilled to see *Alien* making such a huge comeback lately. *Alien: Romulus* was fantastic – seriously, the best the series has been in ages – and it made over $350 million worldwide, which means we’re already getting a sequel! Then, the *Alien: Earth* series dropped and became one of the biggest, most talked-about shows of last year. And it doesn’t stop there! Seeing Weyland-Yutani synthetics show up in the new *Predator: Badlands* film proves the universe is still expanding. It’s incredible to think the original *Alien* came out almost 50 years ago, and now the franchise is back in the spotlight. The filmmakers are clearly brainstorming, and I’m hearing whispers about a project that might even bring back the series’ biggest star – that’s exciting stuff!

Sigourney Weaver recently shared at New York Comic Con (according to Variety) that she’s talked with the studio about potentially returning as Ripley in the *Alien* franchise. She revealed that producer Walter Hill has already written a detailed outline – about 50 pages – for Ripley’s story, and she found it compelling. While nothing is confirmed, Weaver has discussed the idea with Fox/Disney. She previously hadn’t considered revisiting the role, wanting Ripley to have peace, but Hill’s vision resonates with her. The outline depicts Ripley as someone ostracized by society for trying to help humanity, and Weaver is intrigued by the concept and considering collaborating with Hill to develop the full story.

Should Sigourney Weaver Return to Alien?

The idea of Sigourney Weaver returning as Ripley isn’t new. Years ago, director Neill Blomkamp planned a new *Alien* movie that would have followed *Aliens*, ignoring the events of *Alien 3* and *Alien: Resurrection*. More recently, rumors surfaced earlier this year about Ripley appearing in another new *Alien* film, separate from the upcoming *Romulus* sequel. It’s unclear if that project is the one being developed by Hill, but there’s been consistent interest in bringing Weaver back to the franchise for the past ten years.

News is surfacing about Sigourney Weaver’s discussions with Fox/Disney shortly after *Predator: Badlands* director Dan Trachtenberg revealed he’s been talking to Arnold Schwarzenegger about the future of the *Predator* series. The idea of both of these iconic actors potentially returning is exciting, especially considering Trachtenberg appears to be setting the stage for a possible *Alien vs. Predator* movie – hints of a shared universe were present in *Badlands*. Many fans hope that if Weaver and Schwarzenegger both sign on, they’ll eventually share the screen, fighting alongside or against both xenomorphs and Yautja in a major crossover.

If Ripley were to return to the *Alien* series, it would need to be for a truly compelling reason. A crossover with *Predator*, especially one that paired Sigourney Weaver with Arnold Schwarzenegger, could be an exciting new direction for the character. However, any return needs to offer something genuinely new. The recent *Alien: Romulus* introduced popular new characters, and some argue it’s time to focus on them. If the studio decides to move away from the *Romulus* storyline and bring Ripley back, it needs to be for a significant, character-driven reason, not just to appease fans. Otherwise, it could feel forced and unsatisfying.

It’s much too soon to say if a new Ripley film will actually happen. Sigourney Weaver hasn‘t been actively seeking to reprise the role, and her decision will likely depend on the direction of the story Hill is developing. While she enjoyed the first part of the script, the film isn’t close to starting production yet. Hopefully, she’ll love the rest of the story, which could then move the project forward. Even if a crossover with the *Predator* franchise doesn’t happen, fans would be thrilled to see Weaver play Ripley again, especially if it gave the character a satisfying conclusion.
