Throughout the *Final Fantasy* series, many characters have died unexpectedly, though death isn’t always permanent. Interestingly, the first two characters who died in the game were originally intended to play a significant part in one of the most memorable scenes in the entire franchise.
A common running gag in the *Final Fantasy* games is the appearance of characters named Biggs and Wedge. This is a nod to two supporting characters from *Star Wars*. They often play the role of somewhat clumsy friends and have, at different times, aided both the good guys and the bad guys. They first showed up in *Final Fantasy VI*, but in the original SNES version, Biggs was actually known as Vicks.
Biggs & Wedge Were Planned For Final Fantasy VI’s Opera Scene
While many *Final Fantasy* games feature character deaths, *Final Fantasy VI* has the highest number of playable characters who can die. This is because several temporary party members, like Biggs, Wedge, Maduin, General Leo, and the ghosts on the Phantom Train, will perish during the game. Shadow can also die if the player doesn’t act quickly to save him.
At the beginning of the game, Biggs and Wedge are killed. They team up with Terra, who has been brainwashed, and together they fight their way through the defenses of Narshe, searching for a frozen Esper – which is the game’s name for its summonable monsters.
When the Esper appears, it instantly destroys Biggs and Wedge, but also frees Terra from the control she’s under. This dramatic event sets the story in motion, and the other characters never mention Biggs and Wedge again. Interestingly, early plans for the game – revealed in *Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive 1* – show that Biggs and Wedge were originally intended to perform the role that ultimately went to Ultros during the opera scene.
Okay, so the opera scene in *Final Fantasy VI*? Seriously, that’s the moment everyone remembers, and for good reason. The whole game is amazing, but when Celes starts singing, with the SNES pushing its sound to the absolute limit… it blew my mind back in the ’90s, and still holds up! And just when you’re getting into it, Ultros, that giant octopus, crashes the party and you’re thrown right into a boss fight. It’s such a cool sequence.
The original plan involved Biggs and Wedge attempting to stop the battle by dropping objects from above. The fight was meant to have a time limit, and players were supposed to defeat Wedge first, since he was guarding Biggs. It’s not entirely clear why Biggs and Wedge interfered with the opera, but it seems they were working for the Empire and trying to kill Celes, who had switched sides and joined the rebels.
Biggs & Wedge Survived Via A Crossover
Although Biggs and Wedge seemingly died in an explosion, they actually survived. Players can find them alive and well as performers in a circus in the SNES game *Chrono Trigger*, which was created around the same time as *Final Fantasy VI*. Interestingly, both games refer to Biggs as “Vicks” at one point.
Given how closely Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger were made, the appearance of Biggs and Wedge was probably a deliberate Easter egg from the developers. It was an early sign of a shared universe within Square Enix games, an idea they would explore further in titles like the Dissidia series and Kingdom Hearts.
