As a DC fan, it’s already pretty wild to see how interconnected James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU is becoming, and it’s still so early! We’ve only gotten a few projects so far – the *Creature Commandos* animated series, the *Superman* reboot, and the second season of *Peacemaker* – but even within those three, I’ve noticed something cool. Thirteen actors have already played multiple characters! Sometimes it’s just voice work, and other times they’re playing different versions of the same character from across the DC multiverse. It’s a smart way to build things up, and I’m excited to see how it continues!
Several key actors in the new DC Universe, like David Corenswet, John Cena, Jennifer Holland, and Sean Gunn, have already played different characters. This is partly due to the exploration of alternate universes in season 2 of *Peacemaker*, and it’s likely to continue as organizations like Salvation and ARGUS become more important in the DCU. We might even see voice actors taking on multiple roles, meaning this trend could expand as the franchise grows.
13) John Cena as Peacemaker & Earth X’s Peacemaker
John Cena will be a major player in the new DC Universe as his character, Peacemaker. He originally appeared in *The Suicide Squad* and later starred in his own series. The second season of that series featured a different Earth where Peacemaker’s family was still alive, but it was quickly revealed this world was controlled by Nazis who had won World War II. This allowed Cena to portray a darker, more complex version of Peacemaker, though his time playing this version was cut short when he was unexpectedly killed and violently torn apart by a duplicate of himself.
12) Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Superman Robot 22 & Earth X’s Emilia Harcourt
The show *Peacemaker* featured several characters meeting alternate versions of themselves from a parallel Earth controlled by Nazis – a storyline inspired by DC Comics’ Earth X. Emilia Harcourt, played by Jennifer Holland, was one of them. In this alternate reality, she was in a relationship with Peacemaker but ended it when she discovered he wasn’t originally from her world. Interestingly, Peacemaker felt a stronger connection to the Harcourt from his own Earth. Holland also provided the voice for Superman Robot 22 in a reboot of *Superman*, a new addition to the team of robots serving Superman in the Fortress of Solitude.
11) Freddie Stroma as Vigilante & Earth X’s Vigilante
Freddie Stroma played Adrian Chase, also known as Vigilante, in two different versions of the character. Both Vigilantes were very alike, except that the version from the main universe was Peacemaker’s close friend, while the one from Earth X was his enemy and fought with a group called the Sons of Liberty. This group resisted the Nazi rulers in their version of America. Eventually, the Earth X Vigilante battled the Blue Dragon and helped his counterpart and their friends find their way back home.
10) Lochlyn Munro as Larry Fitzgibbon & Earth X’s Larry Fitzgibbon
James Gunn named a character in *Peacemaker*, Larry Fitzgibbon, after a friend of his. In season 1, Fitzgibbon, played by Lochlyn Munro, was a police detective who was taken over by a butterfly and ultimately killed by Vigilante. However, Munro returned for season 2 as Fitzgibbon’s identical twin from another Earth. This version of Fitzgibbon, no longer working with Sophie Song due to prejudice, tried to arrest Peacemaker when he discovered Peacemaker wasn’t originally from his world.
9) Robert Patrick as White Dragon & Blue Dragon
Robert Patrick was a strong addition to the first season of *Peacemaker*, so fans were surprised when his character, the racist and abusive father of Peacemaker (known as the White Dragon), was killed off. However, Patrick returned for season 2, playing a version of his character, Auggie Smith, from another Earth. This time, as the Blue Dragon and leader of the Top Trio, Auggie Smith disagreed with the Nazi control of America and was actually trying to improve the world. Unfortunately, the hero Vigilante didn’t know this when he defeated Blue Dragon.
8) Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag Jr. & Earth X’s Rick Flag Jr.
Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman, died in *The Suicide Squad*, and the casting of Frank Grillo as his father seemed to confirm he wouldn’t reappear in the DC Universe. However, *Peacemaker* season 2 surprised fans with a few scenes featuring Rick Flag Jr. – first in a flashback to before his final mission, and then as an alternate version of himself from another Earth. This ‘Earth X’ Rick Flag Jr. was portrayed as awkward, a bit of a mess, and even a little envious of the connection between Harcourt and Peacemaker, allowing Kinnaman to explore a different side of the character.
7) Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic & Old Woman at Frankenstein’s Castle
The DC Universe’s first animated series, *Creature Commandos*, featured Task Force M, a new take on the Suicide Squad. Led by Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis), the team was assigned to protect Princess Ilana Rostovic of Pokolistan from the sorceress Circe and the Sons of Themyscira. Rostovic secretly planned to take over the world, and manipulated Rick Flag Sr. to cover her tracks. After killing Nina Mazursky to safeguard herself, Rostovic was ultimately killed by the Bride. Notably, Maria Bakalova voiced both Princess Rostovic and the elderly woman who watched for the Bride at Frankenstein Castle.
6) Julian Kostov as Alexi & Sergei
In the *Creature Commandos* series, two characters who were both Princess Rostovic’s guards were surprisingly voiced by the same actor, Julian Kostov. He first played Alexi, who assisted Task Force M when they arrived at Rostovic’s castle. After Alexi was killed by Doctor Phosphorus, Kostov then voiced Sergei, another of the Amethyst Knights. Unlike the helpful Alexi, Sergei strongly disliked the Creature Commandos and fiercely, but ultimately unsuccessfully, tried to protect his princess.
5) Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Clayface, Will Magnus & Superman Robot 4 (Gary)
Alan Tudyk often works with James Gunn and is quickly becoming a key figure in the new DC Universe. He’s best known for voicing Doctor Phosphorus in the animated series *Creature Commandos*, where he also played Will Magnus and Clayface. While Tom Rhys Harries will play Clayface in live-action, Tudyk himself has a live-action role in the DCU as well. He provided the voice and movement for Superman Robot 4 in *Superman*, but jokingly prefers to be called Gary.
4) Stephen Blackehart as Sydney Happersen & Charlie the Gorilla
James Gunn often works with actors he’s friends with, and Stephen Blackehart is one of them. He’s known in the DC universe for playing Sydney Happersen, a key scientist for Lex Luthor, in both *Superman* and season 2 of *Peacemaker*. He also voiced Charlie the Gorilla in season 1 of *Peacemaker* – a gorilla briefly able to speak English after being taken over by a butterfly, before being killed by John Economos. Fans can likely expect to see Blackehart reprise his role as the villainous Sydney Happersen in future DCU projects.
3) Michael Rooker as Sam Fitzgibbon, Superman Robot 1 & Red St. Wild
Although it’s not yet official whether Michael Rooker’s character from *The Suicide Squad* will be part of the new DC Universe, he’s already appeared in three projects within the franchise. He first voiced Sam Fitzgibbon, a character with ties to neo-Nazism and WWII collectibles, in *Creature Commandos*, where his character is ultimately killed by GI Robot. He also briefly provided the voice for Superman Robot 1 in *Superman*. However, he’s best known for his role as Red St. Wild, a skilled eagle hunter and magic user, in season 2 of *Peacemaker*. James Gunn has stated that Rooker will return for a larger role at some point in the future.
2) Sean Gunn as GI Robot, Weasel & Maxwell Lord
James Gunn often includes his brother, Sean Gunn, in his projects, and the DC Universe is no exception. Sean Gunn played Weasel in both the live-action film *The Suicide Squad* and the animated series *Creature Commandos*, and also portrayed the GI Robot who hunts Nazis. James Gunn himself even made a quick appearance in *Superman* as Maxwell Lord, the CEO of LordTech and the financial supporter of the Justice Gang. He previously played Maxwell Lord in season 2 of *Peacemaker* and is expected to reprise the role in future DCU projects.
1) David Corenswet as Superman & Ultraman
David Corenswet is receiving a lot of positive attention for his role as Superman in the upcoming 2025 reboot. He’s expected to be the face of the DC Universe for years to come, and interestingly, he may have also played one of Superman’s greatest enemies: a clone of himself. This clone, created by Lex Luthor from a single hair of Clark Kent and originally known as Ultraman and the Hammer of Boravia, was controlled by the villain until a fight sent him into a black hole. Rumors suggest this clone could reappear as Bizarro, and it’s possible other actors will play multiple characters within the DC Universe in the future.
