As a total movie buff, I’ve always been captivated by vampires – they just keep popping up in stories, from old myths to novels and, of course, films! Hollywood especially can’t seem to get enough, starting way back with classics like *Nosferatu* and continuing through the *Twilight* years. We all know and love films like *Dracula* and the more recent *Let the Right One In* and *Sinners*, but honestly, one of the *best* vampire movies ever made doesn’t get nearly enough attention. And the good news is, it’s super easy to watch right now!
Before he directed one of the *Twilight* movies, David Slade made a really cool horror film you should check out. It’s called *30 Days of Night*, and it’s based on a comic book series. I started watching it on Tubi and Paramount+ just recently – they even have the sequel there too! The story takes place in this tiny town in Alaska called Barrow, where they have a whole month of complete darkness every year. That’s when things get scary because vampires show up and just start attacking everyone. It’s a pretty brutal and intense movie, honestly!
30 Days of Night Is an Underrated Horror Gem with the Scariest Vampires
Vampire movies are usually popular with audiences, but *30 Days of Night* didn’t quite get the recognition it deserved, receiving surprisingly low scores on Rotten Tomatoes – 50% from critics and 56% from viewers. Despite delivering consistent scares and offering a fresh take on vampire lore, it remained somewhat overlooked. The film moves away from the traditionally romantic or gothic depictions of vampires, instead presenting them as truly savage, brutal, and monstrous beings driven by an unending thirst for blood. The terrifying creatures in this movie are among the most frightening vampires ever shown on screen, and few films have matched their level of horror since.
The film’s terrifying atmosphere is largely thanks to its setting: the remote town of Barrow, Alaska, which experiences a continuous period of darkness. This creates the ideal hunting ground for the vampires, shielding them from the sun. The isolation and darkness build a strong sense of dread and despair. Combined with impressive practical effects, gore, and solid performances from actors like Josh Hartnett and Danny Huston, *30 Days of Night* is a genuinely thrilling and captivating movie that will keep you gripped from beginning to end.
Other Horror Movies Now Streaming
With Halloween approaching, many people are planning scary movie nights, and streaming services have responded by adding a lot of horror titles. Tubi now features classics like *An American Werewolf in London*, *Arachnophobia*, *Jennifer’s Body*, and *The Ring*. Paramount+ subscribers can enjoy films like *The Craft*, the original *The Evil Dead* from 1981, and all of the *Scream* movies.
