Last year, Fede Álvarez brought the *Alien* franchise back to life with the hit film *Alien: Romulus*, but he won’t be directing the next installment. He’s still involved as a writer – wanting to protect the characters Rain and Andy – but is letting someone else take over as director. Fans are already speculating about who that might be, and Demián Rugna’s name has come up, after Álvarez mentioned him at a horror convention earlier this year. Rugna has now responded to the rumors about potentially directing the *Alien* sequel.
Rugna told Omelette that while he appreciates the buzz about potentially being involved in a new *Alien* movie, there’s currently no truth to the rumors. He said it’s flattering to be considered, and he’d love the opportunity, but it was just a casual mention by director Fede Álvarez. He wishes the rumors were real, but he had to clarify that he isn’t attached to the project.
Could Demián Rugna Direct the Alien: Romulus Sequel?
Having directed horror films like *When Evil Lurks* and *Terrified*, Rugna understands what makes a truly frightening movie, making him a great fit for an *Alien* film. What worked particularly well in *Alien: Romulus* was its focus on delivering genuinely scary moments rather than complex themes, a contrast to the prequels directed by Ridley Scott. Hiring a horror director like Rugna could guarantee the next *Romulus* sequel remains true to the original *Alien*’s terrifying spirit and provides viewers with plenty of thrills. Given the positive reception to his previous work, Rugna appears ready to take on a larger, more visible project.
So, it sounds like Fede Álvarez is seriously considering Rugna for the *Romulus* sequel! He brought Rugna up at HorrorBound, which tells me Álvarez sees him as a real contender. The good news is Rugna seems interested too, which could open up some promising conversations. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – the project is still very early in development. Álvarez just finished the script about a month ago, and now he and Scott are starting the search for a director. It’s definitely a developing situation, but Rugna’s name being in the mix is exciting!
Álvarez and Scott have plenty of time to develop the next *Alien* film. Since there’s no release date set for the *Alien: Romulus* sequel, they aren’t under pressure to finish quickly. However, 20th Century Studios likely wants to capitalize on the recent success of *Romulus* while the franchise is popular. Both *Romulus* and the *Alien: Earth* series have boosted the franchise’s profile, making it a good time for the studio to keep the momentum going with a follow-up.
Earlier this year, in February, director Álvarez had hoped to begin filming the *Alien: Romulus* sequel by the end of 2024. However, since he’s now stepped down as director, that timeline is probably unrealistic. Beyond finding a new director, no actors have been officially cast yet, aside from the likely return of Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson from the first *Romulus* film. This means there’s still a lot of pre-production work to be done. It’s possible filming could begin sometime next year, either with Álvarez’s replacement or a different director altogether.
