After a surprising eight-year gap, Marvel Studios appears ready to bring back a beloved superhero team to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since the Avengers disbanded in *Avengers: Endgame*, Marvel has hinted at several new teams forming, including the Thunderbolts (now resembling the New Avengers), a team led by Sam Wilson’s Captain America, and groups featuring members of the Young Avengers and Midnight Sons, among others. However, one familiar team has been noticeably absent until now.
Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel’s streaming, TV, and animation, recently told Brandon Davis on the *Phase Hero* podcast that Jessica Jones could return to the MCU surprisingly quickly, potentially after the second season of *Daredevil: Born Again*. Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as Jessica Jones in May 2025, marking her first appearance in seven years since the Netflix *Jessica Jones* series. With Jessica Jones and Daredevil (Charlie Cox) teaming up again after such a long break, fans are speculating about a possible reunion of the Defenders team.
MCU’s New Defenders Team Might Go Through Some Major Changes
Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter may be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s still uncertain if Mike Colter and Finn Jones will join them. Both actors have hinted at a possible return since their Netflix appearances. While fans are eager to see Mike Colter reprise his role as Luke Cage, Finn Jones’ character, Iron Fist, wasn’t as well-received. Marvel has already introduced new versions of Iron Fist, like Kwai Jun-Fan and Jorani, which means Danny Rand might not be the one to return.
As a big Marvel fan, I’m really hoping they bring the Defenders back in a big way with the MCU! If Iron Fist doesn’t rejoin, I think the team dynamic could shift a lot. It’s interesting because the comic book Defenders are way more about magic and the supernatural than what we’ve seen so far. But honestly, adding characters like Hawkeye, White Tiger, Spider-Man, or even War Machine would be amazing! They could really boost the team’s power and make things super exciting. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some big changes and additions!
In early 2024, Marvel Studios officially included the events of the Defenders Saga (the Netflix shows) into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, making those characters and storylines part of the established continuity. Now, it’s important to build on this by fully integrating the Defenders’ earlier adventures into the MCU. We’d love to see this happen through future projects like season 2 of *Daredevil: Born Again*, or even in stories featuring Spider-Man or Jessica Jones, which could re-establish the Defenders as a major force in the MCU.
