As a huge cinema and gaming fan, I’ve been really excited to see PlayStation games getting the Hollywood treatment. Their first-party titles are always these big, cinematic experiences, so it makes perfect sense! We’ve already had films and shows based on games like *Uncharted*, *Gran Turismo*, and the incredible *The Last of Us*, and there are tons more in the works. I’m particularly intrigued by the *Horizon Zero Dawn* movie – that game was such a unique, sprawling sci-fi adventure, and if they get it right, it could launch a whole film series. Gamers, myself included, are eager to see how it turns out, and from what I’ve heard, it’s actually moving forward pretty quickly!
A legal document obtained by The Game Post, related to Sony’s lawsuit against Tencent, reveals Sony’s plans for a *Horizon Zero Dawn* movie. According to PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash, Sony aims to start filming in 2026 and release the movie in 2027. He also stated that they have a completed script and are currently looking for a director. The lawsuit claims Tencent’s *Light of Motiram* unfairly copies the *Horizon* series.
2027 Could Be The Perfect Time To Release the Horizon Zero Dawn Movie
If Sony stays on schedule, the *Horizon Zero Dawn* movie could come out at an ideal moment. A third game in the series is being developed, and it might be ready around 2027 – five years after *Horizon Forbidden West*, which itself launched five years after the original *Zero Dawn*. There’s also talk that the PlayStation 6 could be released in 2027, and *Horizon 3* would be a great game to launch with it. Even if the game isn’t released until 2028, it would still be released around the same time as the movie.
Since it launched eight years ago, the *Horizon* series has become incredibly successful for PlayStation. Sony is exploring ways to grow the franchise with new games, and there’s talk of a live service *Horizon* game in the works. However, the main story is currently planned as a trilogy, which potentially means *Horizon 3* could be the final single-player game. This isn’t set in stone, but Guerrilla Games might want to work on a different project after finishing such a large sci-fi story. Releasing the *Zero Dawn* movie around the time *Horizon 3* comes out could help keep the franchise popular, and if the movie does well, Sony would likely want to make more films in the series.
With 2026 fast approaching, Sony needs to start making progress on the *Horizon Zero Dawn* movie soon. Because the game is so expansive, the film will require a significant amount of time for visual effects – especially to create the unique, animal-like machines. They’re hoping to have a director on board within a few months to begin casting and start filming. It’s crucial to find a director who can skillfully blend the fantasy and science fiction aspects of the game with a compelling and emotional story, as *Horizon Zero Dawn* was celebrated just as much for its narrative as for its stunning visuals and gameplay.
It will be interesting to see when Sony releases the *Horizon Zero Dawn* movie in 2027. The movie calendar for that year is already becoming crowded with major releases, including adaptations of other video games like *The Legend of Zelda*, *Sonic the Hedgehog 4*, and *A Minecraft Movie 2*. Releasing *Horizon* during the busy holiday season seems unlikely, as Sony will probably want to avoid competing with *Avengers: Secret Wars* and *The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum* (which may need to shift its release date to avoid *Avengers*). Ideally, Sony will assemble a production team quickly to secure a release date before all the options are taken.
