Peacemaker Season 2 Repeated a Surprising Behind-the-Scenes Problem, But You’d Never Know It

DC Studios is currently experiencing a lot of positive energy. The new *Superman* movie has been a huge success in theaters and continues to perform well as it becomes available to stream. This success is thanks to James Gunn and his team, who are taking a fresh and innovative approach to building a shared universe of superheroes. While *Superman* is leading the way, DC has several other exciting projects in development to appeal to a wide range of tastes. For example, *Clayface* will be a gritty, R-rated horror film, and *Lanterns* will be a suspenseful thriller following John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder.

However, the standout project is definitely *Peacemaker*, the HBO Max series about a flawed and often failing anti-hero. Both critics and viewers love the show, especially its willingness to explore the characters’ complex emotions. Surprisingly, *Peacemaker* overcame two significant behind-the-scenes issues that nearly stopped production altogether.

Peacemaker Had to Pull a Major Audible for Season 1

James Gunn was most interested in exploring the character of Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, after his appearance in *The Suicide Squad*. This led to a new show where Peacemaker would team up with A.R.G.U.S. once more to save Earth from invading aliens. However, Peacemaker needed help, and the role of Vigilante was given to actor Chris Conrad. Unfortunately, Gunn and Conrad didn’t work well together, and after filming five episodes, the decision was made to replace Conrad with a new actor.

Freddie Stroma stepped into the role of Conrad so well, it was hard to notice a change. His character, Vigilante, had some memorable scenes in the first season of *Peacemaker*, like confronting White Dragon and his followers in prison, and bravely trying to save a friend. Despite challenges, James Gunn and the team delivered a great season. However, a new, though smaller, problem was on the horizon that could still cause issues.

The Second Season of Peacemaker Had to Pull Off Another Recasting

As Season 2 of *Peacemaker* began, the show seemed poised for huge success, especially with its move into the new DC Universe. However, creator James Gunn is taking a more focused approach, choosing to center the season around the complicated relationship between Rick Flag Sr. and Peacemaker. Now in charge of A.R.G.U.S., Flag has the resources to hunt Peacemaker, even targeting someone as unusual as a man who kills eagles. A new character, Red St. Wild, appears in Episode 3 and immediately sets his sights on Peacemaker’s beloved pet eagle, Eagly. Interestingly, Red St. Wild is played by Michael Rooker, a frequent collaborator with Gunn, making his appearance a fun surprise for viewers.

Michael Rooker is known for playing Yondu in the *Guardians of the Galaxy* films and Savant in the DC Extended Universe. While his history with the *Task Force X* team made him an unexpected pick for St. Wild, director James Gunn explained on the *Peacemaker* podcast that the original actor cast in the role didn’t work out. Luckily, St. Wild’s part wasn’t as significant as Vigilante’s was in the first season, so the change was manageable.

Peacemaker is streaming on HBO Max.
