‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Writer Picks a ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Star as the Perfect MCU Nova

Michael Waldron, a writer for the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* and known for creating *Loki* and writing *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness*, has a suggestion for who should play Nova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given his working relationship with Glen Powell – the star of the Hulu series *Chad Powers* which Waldron co-created – it’s likely he believes Powell would be a great fit for the role.

After collaborating with Glen Powell, writer Michael Waldron believes Powell would be perfect for the role of Richard Rider / Nova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with *The Playlist*, Waldron was asked which Marvel character he’d cast Powell as, and immediately responded with Nova, saying, “He’d be a pretty good Nova.” Waldron also praised his *Chad Powers* collaborator, discussing their creative partnership.

He’s not just my collaborator, he *is* Chad Powers. I can always run ideas by him, asking what Chad would do in a given situation. We created the character together and planned out his story arc for several seasons. He understands storytelling really well, and then he absolutely nails the physical performance, even with all the makeup and prosthetics. Honestly, it’s annoying how good he looks while doing it!

Could Glen Powell Finally Get the Long In-Development ‘Nova’ Project Off the Ground?

Nova first appeared in *The Man Called Nova* #1 in September 1976, created by Marv Wolfman and John Romita Sr. Originally a high school student who joined the Nova Corps – a group dedicated to keeping peace across the galaxy – Richard Rider’s Nova has become a major character in the Marvel Universe. He played a key role in the *Annihilation* story arc and has been a member of teams like The Secret Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been waiting for a Nova project for *ages*! They introduced the Nova Corps way back in *Guardians of the Galaxy*, and then showed Xandar getting wrecked in *Infinity War* – it felt like they were definitely setting something up. We first heard about a Disney+ series back in 2022, and it even had a writer attached, but then there was a switch to a different writer at the end of 2024. Now, it looks like the series has been put on hold, and there’s talk that Marvel might actually be planning a Nova *movie* instead. It’s a bit frustrating, but hopefully, we’ll get to see Nova in action eventually!

Glen Powell has been acting for twenty years, with an early role in *Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over*. He first gained wider recognition in 2016 with parts in *Everybody Wants Some* and *Scream Queens*. More recently, starring in successful films like *Top Gun: Maverick*, *Anyone But You*, *Hit Man*, and *Twisters* has made him a highly sought-after actor. While he’s been considered for roles in both the Marvel and DC universes, he doesn’t seem particularly interested in superhero projects, with the exception of *Captain Planet*. However, because of his successful collaboration with writer Christopher Waldron on *Chad Powers*, he might be open to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
