Conjuring 4 Director Shares Surprising Franchise Update After Record-Breaking Box Office

The Conjuring Universe has become a hugely successful horror franchise since its start over ten years ago, earning over $2 billion worldwide through several films and spin-offs. Everyone anticipated that the latest installment, *The Conjuring: Last Rites*, would do well, but its opening weekend performance was surprisingly strong, even breaking some records. While marketed as the final film featuring paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, many fans doubt Warner Bros. will truly retire these characters. However, director Michael Chaves has confirmed that this is indeed the end of their story.

Speaking with ComicBook, producer James Wan confirmed that despite the success of *Last Rites*, the plans for *The Conjuring Universe* remain the same: it’s over. He explained they intentionally titled the film *Last Rites* to signal that this is the final installment and there will be no more *Conjuring* movies. He stated definitively that this is the end of the series.

How The Conjuring Universe Can Continue After Last Rites

While it seems the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren may be finished in film, Warner Bros. probably won’t abandon *The Conjuring* franchise entirely. It’s simply too popular to cancel. They’re already developing a TV series for HBO Max, with Nancy Won as showrunner and Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires writing. Though the plot is still under wraps, the show could breathe new life into the universe after recent movies received a mixed reception. A television format gives Warner Bros. a chance to expand on the rich backstory and mythology of the franchise and develop it more fully.

Beyond the TV series, Warner Bros. will likely try to continue The Conjuring Universe in theaters. The success of spinoffs like *Annabelle* and *The Nun* shows there’s a strong audience for these stories, even beyond the main films about Ed and Lorraine Warren. The studio will probably explore new spinoff ideas – perhaps another *Annabelle* movie or a completely fresh concept – to keep the franchise going without altering the Warrens’ story. With *Last Rites* being such a big hit, it’s very likely they’ll make at least one more spinoff to see how well it performs.

Even though more ‘Conjuring’ movies could be made, it’s probably best to let the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren come to an end. With so many franchises trying to stretch on forever, it’s refreshing when a story concludes neatly, giving characters satisfying endings and fans a sense of closure. The recent ‘Conjuring’ films weren’t as well-received as the first two, and instead of risking a decline in quality, ending the main series now allows it to be remembered for its huge success.

Warner Bros. has found success with both its *Conjuring* franchise and original horror movies. This year, films like *Sinners* and *Weapons* – created by individual writers and directors with distinct ideas – have been big hits. The studio might benefit from actively seeking out more original horror projects, as the genre is often relatively inexpensive to produce, making it a good area to take creative risks. Hopefully, they can discover another film with the same impact as *The Conjuring*.
