Romance has always been a key element in comic books. From the very first issue of Action Comics, Clark Kent was interested in Lois Lane, though she preferred the mysterious Superman. Relationships – whether they’re budding, thriving, or falling apart – are a natural part of life, and they create compelling stories. Because drama is popular, and romance is a reliable source of it, it’s no surprise to see it featured prominently. A great example is Dick Grayson, a popular DC character known for having many love interests, and now, one more has been added to the list.
Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing, has a long history of romantic interests, including well-known characters like Starfire and Barbara Gordon, as well as others like Helena Bertinelli and Shawn Tsang. While he’s had many potential partners, a recent development in the comic *Batman/Superman: World’s Finest* #44—a pairing with Supergirl—could be his most compelling relationship yet, and perhaps DC’s best in a long time.
A Match Made in Neron’s Bathroom
Throughout the comic series, Robin and Supergirl have really disliked each other, ever since their disastrous first date detailed in issue #12, which ended their relationship before it began. To their dismay, they found themselves needing to team up again while Batman and Superman were occupied with other threats. Robin was sent to investigate a factory owned by Lex Luthor, and Supergirl was assigned to help him. Things quickly went wrong when Robin got into trouble and was captured, and Supergirl soon shared his fate after discovering Luthor’s men were creating fake Kryptonite.
Stuck together after being captured by Lex Luthor’s henchmen, Kara and Robin were constantly teased about being a couple. Despite initially clashing and expecting the worst from each other, they discovered they worked surprisingly well as a team. Their bickering gradually became playful, eventually leading to a kiss as they escaped the factory. This kiss unexpectedly activated Robin’s emergency beacon, intended for true disasters. Batman arrived to find the teens denying any romantic involvement. Kara quickly flew away, leaving Robin mortified and both Batman and Superman completely confused.
The Girl of Steel and the Boy Wonder
As we’ve discussed before, Dick Grayson has had many romantic interests. While Kara claims she isn’t one of them, she’s definitely caught his attention. Given how many people Dick has been interested in, it’s hard for anyone to stand out, but Kara has a unique connection with him. Unlike his other relationships, which often start rocky and develop into strong emotional bonds, Kara and Dick don’t have that shared history.
Their relationship got off to a rough start with a terrible first date. While Dick has usually been able to move past initial problems in past relationships, things with Kara are much more unstable. They argue frequently, and although there’s definitely mutual respect and attraction, it seems to stem from their competitive dynamic rather than genuine compatibility. Both of them are less mature than they typically are in relationships, which leads to constant conflict.
Dick’s past relationships have always been about romance, but his connection with Kara is different – it’s based on how well they balance each other out as complete opposites. It’s a much more straightforward relationship, but it’s also really sweet, and their back-and-forth is consistently hilarious. It’s hard to say if this will convince fans who prefer Dick with Starfire or Barbara to root for them, but this kind of relationship is exactly what Dick needs right now. They have amazing chemistry, and I’d love to see a whole series focused on them working together, constantly falling for each other and then playfully pushing each other away. I’m definitely on Team Robin and Supergirl, at least for this storyline.
