A writer known for his work on classic science fiction shows like *Doctor Who* and *Blake’s 7* created his own sci-fi series in 1987. Though it only ran for nine episodes, it has since become a beloved cult classic. The 1980s were a mixed period for sci-fi, even seeing the long-running success of *Doctor Who* come to an end in 1989. However, sci-fi has enjoyed a resurgence, and modern fans are rediscovering hidden gems from that era, including the often-overlooked *Space Cops*.
Created by Chris Boucher, *Space Cops* originally aired on the BBC in 1987 and was set in the year 2027. Although planned for ten episodes, production problems meant only nine were made, and the show was cancelled quickly. Since then, Big Finish, a company known for *Doctor Who* audio dramas, has continued the story with several mini-series, starting in 2018. Now, *Space Cops* is returning with a new six-part series, *Star Cops: Conflict*, featuring original cast members David Calder, Linda Newton, and Trevor Cooper. This new installment promises a high-stakes crisis that could escalate into a full-scale war.
Star Cops: Conflict Continues An Unfairly Canceled Sci-Fi Classic
Star Cops: Conflict is the first new adventure in the Star Cops universe since the conclusion of Blood Moon in 2024. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, imagine a blend of classic Star Trek and police dramas, focusing on futuristic crimes stemming from the difficulties of new technologies – a concept that feels particularly relevant today. The original nine episodes took years to find an audience, but with time, its initial flaws became endearing quirks, much like early Doctor Who. Unfortunately, the BBC’s poor scheduling doomed it to failure. Now, it’s a beloved oddity for fans of 1980s science fiction, and the compelling characters make revisiting the story in audio format a real pleasure.
Philip Olivier and Lynsey Murrell are back as Inspectors Paul Bailey and Alice Okoro from previous *Star Cops* audio adventures, joining the main cast. New faces include Ben Miles (from *Andor*), Jessica Martin (*Spitting Image*), and Hannah Bristow (*The Man Who Fell to Earth*). The episodes will be released between January and March, starting with “Suspicion and Sabotage” by Andrew Smith, and will continue with three more episodes between September and November 2026. Currently, these audio dramas are the only way to experience *Star Cops* in the US, as the original series isn’t available on any streaming services – and that really needs to change!
In “Suspicion and Sabotage,” the world is facing a critical shortage of essential minerals. As nations compete to mine resources from the asteroid belt, distrust grows, and tensions rise. When sabotage occurs at a lunar mining base and an assassination attempt happens on Earth, the threat of war looms large. The story follows officers from the International Space Police Force as they race to prevent a global disaster.
