DC’s Canceled Batgirl Movie Gets a Surprisingly Hopeful Update, 3 Years After Warner Bros Pulled The Plug

In August 2022, DC fans were stunned when Warner Bros. suddenly canceled the nearly finished *Batgirl* movie. Starring Leslie Grace as Batgirl, alongside J.K. Simmons, Jacob Scipio, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Keaton, the film was intended for release on HBO Max. Warner Bros. stated the movie “didn’t work” and didn’t align with their goal of making DC films large-scale theatrical releases. While fans protested the decision, there’s now some surprising good news about *Batgirl* three years later, suggesting it might still see the light of day.

While promoting his latest movie, Scipio told *The Direct* that he’d seen *Batgirl* and really enjoyed it, calling it “phenomenal.” He also hinted that there’s still a chance the film could be released if fans show enough interest.

Scipio said he saw the film and thought it was incredible. He expressed disappointment that it didn’t reach a wider audience, but remained hopeful about the future.

He was thrilled that *Coyote vs. Acme* was saved and said he’s already planning to buy a ticket and see it. He believes this shows that anything is possible in Hollywood if there’s enough public demand.

Coyote vs. Acme Got a Second Chance, Could Batgirl Be Next?

I was really struck by what Scipio said about *Coyote vs. Acme*. It’s a crazy situation! The film, which is based on that fascinating New Yorker article about Wile E. Coyote suing Acme for all those faulty products, suffered the same fate as *Batgirl*. Warner Bros. finished the movie, but then decided not to release it just to get a tax break – can you believe it? It was the third time they’d shelved a completed film for that reason, after *Batgirl* and *Scoob! Holiday Haunt*. But there was a huge fan outcry, and thankfully, the story didn’t end there. Ketchup Entertainment stepped in and eventually bought the rights. Now, we’re finally getting to see it – it’s scheduled for release on August 26, 2026! It’s a real victory for fans, and I’m so glad this little underdog movie will finally see the light of day.

So far, Batgirl hasn’t had a chance to overcome its cancellation with a satisfying resolution. Legally, bringing the film back is complicated because the studio already claimed it as a tax loss, and reversing that decision could create legal issues. It’s also unlikely Batgirl will get the same second chance as *Coyote vs. Acme*, as it’s a DC property. With James Gunn and Peter Safran already building a new DC Universe with films like *Peacemaker* and *Superman*, it’s improbable the rights to Batgirl would be sold. Ultimately, reviving the film might be too difficult to make happen.

As Scipio points out, you should never say never. We’ve seen before that a seemingly canceled DC movie can actually get released. For example, Zack Snyder’s longer version of the 2017 film *Justice League* – often called the Snyder Cut – came out in 2021 after a huge fan campaign. While the situation with *Justice League* is different from the case of *Batgirl*, it shows that strong fan support can sometimes change things.
