Team building events are often popular with managers but disliked by employees, and many see them as just a way to reduce company taxes. Years ago, the team at AnyGoodFilms experienced a particularly disastrous one. Our editor volunteered to be the first to attempt a 100-foot bungee jump, but it went wrong when someone forgot to properly secure the rope to the bridge. He ended up in the hospital needing traction, but he’d probably be happy to know that the incident led to a full day of team bonding… involving a lot of drinking. We all ended up quite intoxicated, in a way that strangely mirrors the experiences of the characters in the show ‘Severance‘.

When a team-building retreat in Eastern Europe turns deadly, seven colleagues must fight for their lives. Sabotage and a ruthless enemy turn a simple weekend into a terrifying struggle for survival against a dangerous, forgotten force. They’ll face treacherous traps and brutal attacks, and quickly realize that teamwork isn’t enough when the goal is simply to survive – and that being stuck with your coworkers while facing mortal danger isn’t ideal.

Christopher Smith, known for his earlier film *Creep* (2004), directed this horror follow-up. He assembled a solid cast including Danny Dyer and Laura Harris, alongside Tim McInnerny, Toby Stephens, and Andy Nyman. Like many horror movies, the premise centers around a group of people destined to die in gruesome ways – the suspense lies in *how* and *who* might survive. Expect plenty of violent scenes: limbs are severed, bodies are beaten, and characters are stabbed, slashed, burned, and even beheaded. Ironically, the team-building exercises the characters initially dislike become essential for their survival, as they must work together to have any chance of escaping alive.

This movie is a fun horror comedy with plenty to offer, though it’s not particularly scary. While it earned a 15 rating, you likely won’t find yourself covering your eyes. However, this Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and DVD release includes a ton of bonus features, making it a worthwhile purchase.

This release includes insightful commentary from the cast and crew, plus new interviews with writer/director Christopher Smith and actor Andy Nyman. You’ll also find eight behind-the-scenes featurettes – including looks at making the film ‘Severance,’ a profile of Danny Dyer, and a discussion of the special effects. Additional content includes behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, and outtakes.

The commentary is a blast, with Dyer and Smith at their best. The interviews, featuring Smith and the incredibly talented Andy Nyman, are also excellent. There are tons of funny stories, including one about a Hungarian stunt team who completely ignored safety rules – their reckless driving led to a crash and landed the stunt driver in the hospital, though he quickly recovered and went back to work! It’s almost like they hired the Jackass crew to handle the stunts. The behind-the-scenes featurettes are hilariously honest, especially ‘Not So Special Effects’ and ‘Being Danny Dyer.’ Overall, *Severance* is a perfect Saturday night movie, and the cast clearly had as much fun making it as the audience will have watching it.
