Now that he’s focusing on other projects, Ryan Coogler is sharing news about the rumored revival of The X-Files. For the past five years, there have been efforts to bring the classic sci-fi show back, starting with an animated version that was ultimately cancelled. Coogler then began developing a reboot, which was first announced by the show’s original creator, Chris Carter, in early 2023.
In the years following, the new X-Files has been developing gradually, partly because Ryan Coogler has been busy expanding the Black Panther universe within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and creating his horror series, Sinners. While promoting Sinners, the two-time Oscar nominee confirmed the X-Files reboot would be his next focus, and reports soon emerged that a lead actor was already being considered.
In a recent interview with Variety about the re-release of his film Sinners, Ryan Coogler discussed his plans for the new X-Files series. He explained that the original show is meaningful to both him and his mother, and he intends to update it in a similar way to how he reimagined Rocky with Creed.
Like Rocky with my dad, The X-Files is something really special I share with my mom – who is here tonight, and means everything to me. I really want to make her and the fans proud with my work on it. She’s already read some of what I’ve written and she’s very excited!
During the same interview, Coogler addressed rumors that Danielle Deadwyler, known for her role in The Woman in the Yard, was being considered to star in the new series. He jokingly said he couldn’t confirm or deny the reports. He also didn’t reveal whether original X-Files stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny would return.
Since Ryan Coogler previously mentioned starting work on the new series over the summer, it’s possible he’s already discussing lead roles with actors. Early reports suggest he wants a more diverse cast than the original, and Jakiya Deadwyler would be a strong choice to star, though Coogler likely can’t confirm anything about casting at this time.
Fans are eager to know if the new X-Files series will connect to the original, and whether Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will be involved. Anderson has said she spoke with the show’s creator, Ryan Coogler, about potentially returning as Scully and wished him well with the reboot. Duchovny hasn’t been as definitive, but seems open to the possibility.
No matter who ends up starring, it’s clear Ryan Coogler is approaching the X-Files reboot with a lot of respect. He proved with Creed that he can successfully update a classic like Rocky – adding new depth while still capturing the original spirit. If he delivers on his promise to make the new X-Files both scary and exciting – something his mother would be enthusiastic about – he could easily revitalize the franchise for a new generation.
