Finding and catching Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A will feel similar to previous games, but with a few changes. Whether you’re catching standard Pokémon or the larger Alpha Pokémon, keeping a few key strategies in mind will help you succeed.
This guide for Pokémon Legends: Z-A explains the best way to approach and catch wild Pokémon consistently.
Stealth Captures
When trying to approach wild Pokémon, be prepared for different reactions – most will run away, but some might charge at you. The best way to start is always to sneak up on them, no matter what their personality seems to be. To do this, push the left thumbstick to crouch. Try to use your surroundings to your advantage, like tall grass, to stay hidden as you get closer. Remember, it’s only your character that needs to avoid being seen – whether your Pokémon are visible doesn’t matter.
When you get close enough, press the ZL button to zoom in and bring up a targeting reticle. Look at the arrows to the right of the reticle – the more green arrows you see, the better your chances of catching the Pokémon, and this happens when the Pokémon is facing away from you. Once the reticle confirms a lock, press ZR to throw a Poké Ball. Quick Balls are great for sneaking up on Pokémon and have a higher catch rate, but the best Poké Ball to use might depend on the type and level of the Pokémon you’re trying to catch.
Combat Captures
Certain Pokémon are tough to catch, and the best way to ensure you succeed is by battling them. This is especially true for wild Pokémon that aggressively approach you. Simply send out your own Pokémon to begin the fight.
Okay, so now you gotta weaken the wild Pokemon until they’re dizzy – you’ll know because they get a little star halo around their head. Once they’re like that, you have a short window to catch them! If you don’t act fast, they’ll just poof and disappear, so you gotta be quick on the ball!
Canari Plushes
Besides the many different kinds of special Poke Balls, you can also collect five unique Canari Plushes. You can find these items in the Shop Inventory at the Colorful Screw Exchange within Racine Construction. Each plush has a specific purpose, which is explained in its description.
Trade three Colorful Screws to get the Blue Canari Plush, which makes it easier to catch wild Pokémon.
So, I found out you can actually equip all five Canari Plushes at the same time, which is awesome! And get this – you can upgrade them to make their effects even better. If I want to fully upgrade my Blue Canari Plush, I need to collect a whopping sixteen Colorful Screws. It’s a bit of a grind, but totally worth it!
