Recasting Kang After Avengers: Secret Wars: 7 Perfect Actors for the Multiversal Villain

After the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be starting fresh, and this means the role of Kang the Conqueror will be recast. Jonathan Majors first played a version of Kang, called He Who Remains, in the Loki season 1 finale in 2021. He then appeared as different versions of the character in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki season 2 in 2023. However, due to his arrest and conviction on harassment and assault charges in December 2023, Marvel Studios fired Majors, leaving the future of Kang in the MCU unclear.

After Jonathan Majors was fired by Marvel Studios, many fans hoped they’d quickly find a new actor to play Kang. The complex nature of Kang – Majors played multiple versions of the character across the multiverse – made a simple recast difficult. As a result, Marvel has decided to introduce Doctor Doom as the main villain instead. However, Kang’s story isn’t necessarily over, and he could reappear in future Marvel movies, particularly after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars which are expected to reset the universe. There are also plenty of skilled actors who could potentially take on the role.

7) John Boyega

John Boyega, a British actor, first became known for his work in Attack the Block, but he’s now widely recognized as Finn from the newer Star Wars films. Many fans would love to see him play Kang, and he’s definitely talented enough for the part, but Boyega has repeatedly said he’s not interested. He’s recently delivered fantastic performances in movies like The Woman King, Small Axe, and They Cloned Tyrone, leading some to hope he’d join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he doesn’t appear to have any desire to be in a superhero franchise.

6) Corey Hawkins

Corey Hawkins quickly found success after leaving The Walking Dead in season seven. He’s showcased his impressive acting skills in films like BlacKkKlansman, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and The Color Purple, as well as the series Poker Face. This range makes him a strong candidate to play different versions of Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hawkins actually has some prior Marvel experience with a small role in Iron Man 3, which could give him an advantage in landing the part.

5) David Oyelowo

David Oyelowo is known for his ability to play incredibly complex and powerful characters with subtlety and depth. He’s an excellent choice to take over the role of Kang and his alternate versions, especially considering his strong stage experience, which would bring a unique charisma and dramatic flair to the character. Oyelowo has earned widespread praise for his performances in films and series like Selma, Lincoln, Silo, The Butler, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves. His role in Lawmen: Bass Reeves particularly showcased his ability to portray a strong, commanding, and physically imposing character – all essential qualities for Kang.

4) John David Washington

Now that Denzel Washington is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the next Black Panther movie, many fans are hoping his son, John David Washington, will also get a major role. John David has impressed audiences in films like BlacKkKlansman, Tenet, Malcolm & Marie, and The Creator, and is a popular choice to play the villain Kang. He has the right look, a compelling screen presence, and the acting range to convincingly portray Kang and his different versions, which would be a major win for Marvel Studios.

3) Ray Fisher

Ray Fisher first gained recognition in the superhero world with his role in the 2017 film Justice League, but his experience wasn’t positive. Now, he has a chance to shine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially as a new version of Kang the Conqueror. While his film debut as Cyborg showed his potential, recent performances in The Piano Lesson (both on stage and screen), True Detective, and Women of the Movement have proven Fisher is a truly talented actor. Marvel Studios should definitely sign him up!

2) Caleb McLaughlin

As a huge movie fan, I’m already thinking about what the Stranger Things cast will do next now that the show is wrapping up, and I think I’ve found a perfect fit for Caleb McLaughlin – the MCU! At 24, he’s got the potential to play a younger Kang the Conqueror, or even better, Iron Lad – a key member of the Young Avengers in the comics. He’s done a lot of voice work lately, which is great, but I’m really excited about the possibility of seeing him take on a major live-action role, especially after Stranger Things finishes with season 5.

1) Trevante Rhodes

Trevante Rhodes quickly became a well-known actor after his leading role in Moonlight, and he’s consistently chosen challenging and meaningful parts since then. He’s appeared in films like 12 Strong, Bird Box, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and Mike, but he hasn’t yet joined a superhero movie. Because he was a talented athlete when he was younger, Rhodes has the build, charisma, and endurance to play a strong character like Kang, and that role could make him a household name. With Kang expected to be recast after Avengers: Secret Wars, Trevante Rhodes would be an excellent choice.
