The BBC confirmed that a Christmas special of the Motherland spin-off, Amandaland, is in the works, bringing back Lucy Punch, Philippa Dunne, and Joanna Lumley.
While Lumley initially mentioned it in early October on Virgin Radio’s ‘The Chris Evans Breakfast Show,’ the BBC has now officially announced that a Christmas special is confirmed.
If that wasn’t exciting enough, Joanna Lumley will be joined by Jennifer Saunders, her co-star from Absolutely Fabulous. Saunders will play her on-screen sister, Aunt Joan, who is described as a lively, boisterous woman who loves country life and is quite the contrast to Felicity.
It also marks the first time the pair have been reunited on screen since their Ab Fab days.
Saunders expressed her excitement about appearing in a Christmas special with the team at Amandaland, and writers Holly Walsh and Laurence Rickard said she was a great fit for the show.
Saunders said that acting as Joanna’s sister will definitely be fun, because everyone enjoys a lively family gathering, especially one with the SoHa vibe.
Punch promised the Christmas special will be fantastic – truly exciting and full of festive cheer. It’s going to be a hit!

Great news! Filming for the second season is now underway. This follows the show’s successful first season and its renewal announcement in March.
The show’s debut episode was watched by 7.4 million people, making it the BBC’s second most popular new comedy launch recently, after Ludwig.
“It’s an absolute joy to be back in SoHa (South Harlesden) again,” said Walsh and Rickard.
We’ve spent the last six months learning about Brent Council’s rules on illegal dumping, practicing an Irish accent for a character, and working on the script. Now we’re thrilled to finally start filming with our fantastic cast!
The first season centered around Punch, a popular and confident woman, as she navigated life after her divorce by moving to South Harlesden. She faced new difficulties, like having to work in retail – something she dreaded – and almost repeated past mistakes in a fast-moving relationship.
Is a new relationship brewing between Anne and her neighbor, Mal? And what other troubles will push Anne to her breaking point?
Season 2 will arrive on the BBC in 2026.
