As fall arrives, awards season is now underway in Hollywood. Many of the films expected to be nominated have already been shown in theaters or at film festivals, though a few potential contenders are still upcoming. One of the most talked-about is No Other Choice, a darkly funny movie from South Korean director Park Chan-wook. It stars Lee Byung-hun, known for Squid Game, as a man who desperately tries to get a job. No Other Choice received excellent reviews after premiering at film festivals earlier this year and is considered one of the top movies of 2025.
Currently, the film No Other Choice has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 69 critic reviews. Critics agree that the film, directed by Park Chan-wook, is a sharply witty critique of the competitive world of business, with Lee Byung-Hun delivering a brilliantly understated performance.
Which Oscars Can No Other Choice Contend For?
While major awards nominations are still to come, the film No Other Choice is already gaining recognition. It was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, suggesting it’s connecting with both critics and audiences. This early buzz is a positive sign as awards season progresses, and indicates strong support for the film.
Most experts predict No Other Choice will be South Korea’s submission for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, and it’s considered a strong contender. The bigger question is whether it can also be nominated for Best Picture. The Academy has become more inclusive in recent years, leading to increased recognition for international films in this category. In fact, it’s now quite common for at least one foreign film to receive a Best Picture nomination – Emilia Pérez and I’m Still Here were both nominated last year.
Several international films are strong contenders this year, including the comedic drama Sentimental Value. Neon is distributing both Sentimental Value and No Other Choice in North America, which means the studio may need to focus its awards campaign efforts on just one of them – Oscar campaigns require significant resources. Sentimental Value might get priority because Stellan Skarsgård is considered a likely nominee for Best Supporting Actor. This could mean No Other Choice will aim for a nomination in the International Feature category, especially with many deserving American films also in the running.
Despite Neon facing some tough choices about which films to prioritize, No Other Choice is still a contender for Best Picture. Its sharp and funny take on current societal worries could resonate with enough voters to earn a nomination. While it’s too early to say if it will follow in Parasite’s footsteps and actually win, No Other Choice promises to be an engaging and insightful film when it’s released later this year.
