Science fiction television has thrived in the 21st century. After a strong start in the early 2000s – a resurgence for a genre that had previously peaked in the 1980s – shows like Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, and Doctor Who became instant classics. This success continued through the 2010s and into the age of streaming, with series such as The Expanse and, more recently, Apple TV+’s Severance proving to be among the best science fiction shows ever made.
Given Netflix’s position as the leading TV studio of the last ten years, it should be the platform for Black Mirror. Netflix took over the show after its first two seasons on Channel 4, enhancing it with a larger budget and a more polished American style, while thankfully preserving the clever storytelling of creator Charlie Brooker. The third season, which premiered on October 21, 2016, is widely considered one of the show’s strongest, and features what many believe to be its best episode, “San Junipero.”
Black Mirror’s San Junipero Is A Perfect Sci-Fi Episode

Truly great science fiction TV episodes usually have one of two things: a really clever, self-contained idea, or a way to surprisingly expand on the show’s overall themes. A good twist or two is always welcome, but what really matters is balancing the futuristic or fantastical elements with relatable characters and genuine emotional depth. Think about classic episodes from shows like Firefly (“Out of Gas”), Lost (“The Constant”), Doctor Who (“Blink”), or Battlestar Galactica (“Pegasus”) – they all manage to do that, connecting big ideas with heartfelt stories.
As a huge fan of Black Mirror, I think “San Junipero” really nails what makes the show so great. It takes a tech idea – being able to upload your mind and live forever in a simulation – and uses it to tell a deeply human story. This episode focuses on the beautiful romance between Yorkie and Kelly, and Mackenzie Davis and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are just incredible in those roles. But what really sets “San Junipero” apart isn’t just the acting; it’s the gorgeous visuals, the perfect music, and especially that unforgettable ending. It’s honestly one of my favorites!
The finale of “San Junipero” is unusually hopeful and moving for Black Mirror, and that’s what makes it so powerful. It still maintains the show’s signature thought-provoking darkness and questions about what it truly means to live forever. Like great science fiction, it takes a familiar idea and explores it in a creative and unexpected way, which is why it remains as captivating and brilliant today as it was when it first aired.
“San Junipero” and other Black Mirror episodes are available to stream on Netflix.
