Janelle Monáe Says She Traveled Back in Time to See David Bowie

Janelle Monáe believes that she went back in time to see a hero—just for one day. 

Lucy Dacus shared in an interview that she felt like she traveled back in time to experience seeing David Bowie at the peak of his career, even though he passed away in 2016.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Janelle described going back to the 1970s and seeing David Bowie perform Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, calling it an unforgettable experience.

Lucy, age 30, was surprised to learn Janelle had actually been to the 1973 concert musical and asked, “Wait, you mean you time traveled?”

Janelle, 39, shared that she realized she wanted to create a musical while backstage at a show. She then decided to focus on the 2000s as inspiration, allowing her to write the music, lyrics, and build a community centered on personal growth and embracing individuality – not just in terms of sexuality, but in how people perceive the world.

Taraji P. Henson, known for her role in Hidden Figures, has talked before about her ability to connect with different time periods. She’s said that thinking about time itself inspires the forward-thinking sound of her music.

In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Janelle explained that while she often thinks about what’s to come, she believes it’s also important to learn from the past and focus on the present to build a better future.

As someone who studies how people experience life, I’ve noticed fascinating differences in how we relate to time. Janelle, for example, feels she can actually control how time passes, which is incredible! But you know, not everyone buys into that idea. In fact, Mariah Carey is famous for completely dismissing the concept of time altogether – she just doesn’t believe in it! It really shows you how subjective our experience of time can be.

“I just don’t believe in it,” she told Capital FM in June. “Just let it go.”

Indeed, though Mariah was born in 1969, the 56-year-old assured she “doesn’t have a birthday.”

Naturally, the person known for her Christmas spirit doesn’t impose her own preferences on others’ plans.

She admitted she needs someone to gently remind her when she’s running late. “I can be a bit childish,” she told Variety in 2019, “but my real fans are aware of that side of me.”

Beauty is pain, but Kim Kardashian might be able to stomach it.

I was reading that the reality star said she’d honestly try anything to look younger! She told the New York Times she’s really dedicated to maintaining a youthful appearance, and it sounds like she means it.

She admitted in June that she’d even consider something extreme – like eating something disgusting daily – if it meant looking younger. She emphasized she was serious, saying, ‘I just might!’

In a July 2022 interview with Allure, Kim explained she was mostly joking when she made the comment, but admitted it wasn’t a completely awful idea.

Kim thought for a moment and then said, ‘Honestly, I’d probably eat something awful if someone promised it would make me look younger – even if it meant eating a bowl of poop every day.’

Asked how much she could eat, she said, “Perhaps just a bite.” She added that a full bowl would be too much for her.

He firmly believed it was just a misunderstanding. “I sincerely apologize,” he said. “I saw the audience turn from supportive to completely against me.”
