HBO Max is embarking on a major project: a new Harry Potter TV series. This won’t follow the story from the Cursed Child play or introduce a brand new tale within the Wizarding World. Instead, it’s a complete restart, retelling the entire story beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This approach allows the show to develop characters that didn’t get much attention in the films, but it also comes with significant challenges.
The main complaint about this new series is that it doesn’t feel original. Since the stories from all the Harry Potter books have already been turned into movies, and those movies were generally well-made, it will be hard for the reboot to improve upon them. There are even at least five scenes from the original Harry Potter films that this new series will likely find difficult to surpass.
5) Cedric Diggory’s Death
The death of Cedric Diggory is a turning point in the Harry Potter series. Before this tragic event in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the books were largely lighthearted adventures about magic. Afterwards, the story became a much darker and more serious battle between good and evil. The scene is particularly impactful because of the raw emotion displayed by those witnessing Cedric’s death, most notably his father, Amos Diggory, who is overcome with grief.
4) Dumbledore v Voldemort
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Voldemort, now physically restored, becomes much more aggressive in his pursuit of power. He’s determined to find a prophecy hidden within the Ministry of Magic that foretells his downfall. When Harry and his friends go to the Ministry, a fierce battle breaks out, tragically resulting in the death of Sirius Black. Harry nearly meets the same fate, but Dumbledore arrives just in time to confront Voldemort. The duel between these two powerful wizards is considered the most spectacular in the entire Harry Potter series, showcasing the incredible potential of skilled magic users.
3) Harry Potter Saves Himself
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban can be a bit confusing due to its time travel elements. But even a complicated story can’t diminish how amazing it is to see Harry use the Patronus Charm to protect himself from the Dementors. Throughout the story, Harry expects his father to rescue him, but he soon realizes he’s on his own. Forced to rely on himself, Harry casts his most powerful spell and discovers his own strength.
2) Sirius Black Reveals the Truth
It might feel repetitive to include two scenes from one movie, but Prisoner of Azkaban is simply outstanding and deserves the recognition. For almost the entire film, Harry is led to believe Sirius Black is a dangerous criminal who killed his parents. The powerful scene where Harry and Sirius finally meet reveals the truth: Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers, is actually Peter Pettigrew in disguise, and Sirius exposes him. Gary Oldman’s performance is phenomenal, and the scene is even more impactful with Alan Rickman and David Thewlis also present.
1) “Always.”
Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Severus Snape is arguably the best character adaptation in the Harry Potter films. The complexity of the character translates beautifully from the books, and this is especially clear in the scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 where he speaks with Dumbledore about Harry’s destiny. Although he disliked Harry’s father, James, Snape’s deep love for Harry’s mother, Lily, drives him to protect her son at all costs. The reveal of this love after Snape’s death is incredibly powerful. It will be a real challenge for Paapa Essiedu and the rest of the cast to capture that same magic in the new TV series.
