James Gunn’s Superman and Creature Commandos have kicked off the new DC Universe with both live-action and animated projects, and future DC movies seem to be building towards a film featuring Batman and Robin – specifically, a story with two different versions of Robin, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. This movie, announced late in 2024, will use a mix of animation styles and reportedly includes work from a well-known artist who has contributed to both DC and Marvel comics.
I’m so excited to share that Dynamic Duo is going to feature artwork from Jock, who’s been amazing me and comic fans for over 25 years! He actually got his start with Judge Dredd in 2000 AD, but a lot of us Batman fans probably know him best from his work on the DC Black series Batman: One Dark Knight. He also collaborated with Scott Snyder on some incredible runs like Detective Comics, The Batman Who Laughs, and All-Star Batman – I’ll share a more complete list of his work later, but trust me, you’re in for a treat!
I’m a huge fan of Jock’s work, and it’s so exciting to hear he’s been involved with a new Batman project! He’s always brought such a unique style to the character, tackling both the grittier and more hopeful sides of the story. He recently let slip to Popverse that he’s been designing things for Swaybox Studios in New Orleans – he even went down there to meet the team and see what they’ve been creating. He hinted at where he’s been most useful, but understandably, he’s keeping a lot under wraps for now, which just builds the anticipation even more!
I’ve been working on visual development, and it’s going really well! I can’t share all the details just yet, but it’s a perfect fit for my skills and I’m very excited about it.
Jock couldn’t reveal any specifics about the story or upcoming characters, but he did express his admiration for the team at Swaybox and hinted at some impressive visuals. Honestly, it’s going to be incredibly difficult waiting for this to finally come out!
It’s incredible to see their work come to life in Gotham. I’ve been fortunate to work on many projects, but this one is particularly exciting. It uses puppetry combined with computer animation – it’s truly amazing! It’s a fantastic blend of different artistic skills, and the visuals are absolutely stunning. It’s a remarkable achievement, honestly.
I find it interesting that Jock’s skills seem well-suited to his current work. He’s primarily done darker, more mature comics like Creatures Commandos, while the Dynamic Duo project is expected to be more family-friendly, similar to Superman. Throughout his career, he’s focused on more serious comic book titles, and his upcoming Absolute Batman #15 will be another collaboration with Scott Snyder.

- The Losers
- Faker
- Green Arrow: Year One
- Savage Wolverine
- Immortals: Gods and Heroes
- Gone
- Wytches (also written by Scott Snyder)
Beyond his interior art, he’s also known for fantastic cover work, especially for the comic Scalped by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra. If DC is including him in the new movie, it shows they have a lot of faith in both his talent and the film itself. I’m really excited to hear him share more details, like whether this movie will impact Robin’s part in the upcoming Brave and the Bold film.
The film Dynamic Duo is currently scheduled for release on June 30, 2028 – quite a ways off! Hopefully, by then, we’ll finally know who has been cast as Batman in the DC Universe.
